Matthew 14

1At that time did Herod the tetrarch hear the fame of Jesus,

1At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.

2and said to his servants, `This is John the Baptist, he did rise from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.'

2And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

3For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,

3For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.

4for John was saying to him, `It is not lawful to thee to have her,'

4For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5and, willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him.

5And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.

6But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and did please Herod,

6But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.

7whereupon with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask.

7Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.

8And she having been instigated by her mother--`Give me (says she) here upon a plate the head of John the Baptist;

8But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.

9and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those reclining with him, he commanded <FI>it<Fi> to be given;

9And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.

10and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison,

10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11and his head was brought upon a plate, and was given to the damsel, and she brought <FI>it<Fi> nigh to her mother.

12And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus,

13and Jesus having heard, withdrew thence in a boat to a desolate place by himself, and the multitudes having heard did follow him on land from the cities.

13Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by a boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.

14And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion upon them, and did heal their infirm;

14And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

15and evening having come, his disciples came to him, saying, `The place is desolate, and the hour hath now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone to the villages, they may buy to themselves food.'

15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now passed: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.

16And Jesus said to them, `They have no need to go away--give ye them to eat.'

16But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.

17And they say to him, `We have not here except five loaves, and two fishes.'

17They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.

18And he said, `Bring ye them to me hither.'

18Who said to them: Bring them hither to me.

19And having commanded the multitudes to recline upon the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he did bless, and having broken, he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes,

19And when he had commanded the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

20and they did all eat, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full;

20And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.

21and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.

21And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.

22And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before him to the other side, till he might let away the multitudes;

22And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.

23and having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone,

23And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.

24and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

24But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.

25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking upon the sea,

25And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.

26and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying--`It is an apparition,' and from the fear they cried out;

26And they seeing him walking upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.

27and immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, `Be of good courage, I am <FI>he<Fi> , be not afraid.'

27And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.

28And Peter answering him said, `Sir, if it is thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters;'

28And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.

29and he said, `Come;' and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters to come unto Jesus,

29And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat walked upon the water to come to Jesus.

30but seeing the wind vehement, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, `Sir, save me.'

30But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.

31And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him, and saith to him, `Little faith! for what didst thou waver?'

31And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?

32and they having gone to the boat the wind lulled,

32And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.

33and those in the boat having come, did bow to him, saying, `Truly--God's Son art thou.'

33And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.

34And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret,

34And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.

35and having recognized him, the men of that place sent forth to all that region round about, and they brought to him all who were ill,

35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.

36and were calling on him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as did touch were saved.

36And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.
