1And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan and was led the by the spirit into the desert,
1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, turned back from the Jordan, and was brought in the Spirit to the wilderness,
2For the space of forty days, and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
2forty days being tempted by the Devil, and he did not eat anything in those days, and they having been ended, he afterward hungered,
3And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread.
3and the Devil said to him, `If Son thou art of God, speak to this stone that it may become bread.'
4And Jesus answered him: is written that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.
4And Jesus answered him, saying, `It hath been written, that, not on bread only shall man live, but on every saying of God.'
5And the devil led him into a high mountain and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
5And the Devil having brought him up to an high mountain, shewed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,
6And he said to him: To thee will I give all this power and the glory of them. For to me they are delivered: and to whom I will, I give them.
6and the Devil said to him, `To thee I will give all this authority, and their glory, because to me it hath been delivered, and to whomsoever I will, I do give it;
7If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine.
7thou, then, if thou mayest bow before me--all shall be thine.'
8And Jesus answering said to him. It is written: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
8And Jesus answering him said, `Get thee behind me, Adversary, for it hath been written, Thou shalt bow before the Lord thy God, and Him only thou shalt serve.'
9And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on a pinnacle of the temple and said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence.
9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, `If the Son thou art of God, cast thyself down hence,
10For it is written that He hath given his angels charge over thee that they keep thee.
10for it hath been written--To His messengers He will give charge concerning thee, to guard over thee,
11And that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.
11and--On hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou mayest dash against a stone thy foot.'
12And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
12And Jesus answering said to him--`It hath been said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.'
13And all the temptation being ended, the devil departed from him for a time.
13And having ended all temptation, the Devil departed from him till a convenient season.
14And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit, into Galilee: and the fame of him went out through the whole country.
14And Jesus turned back in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a fame went forth through all the region round about concerning him,
15And he taught in their synagogues and was magnified by all.
15and he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
16And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day: and he rose up to read.
16And he came to Nazareth, where he hath been brought up, and he went in, according to his custom, on the sabbath-day, to the synagogue, and stood up to read;
17And the book of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written:
17and there was given over to him a roll of Isaiah the prophet, and having unfolded the roll, he found the place where it hath been written:
18The spirit of the Lord is upon me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart,
18`The Spirit of the Lord <FI>is<Fi> upon me, Because He did anoint me; To proclaim good news to the poor, Sent me to heal the broken of heart, To proclaim to captives deliverance, And to blind receiving of sight, To send away the bruised with deliverance,
19To preach deliverance to the captives and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of reward.
19To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.'
20And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
20And having folded the roll, having given <FI>it<Fi> back to the officer, he sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing on him.
21And he began to say to them: This day is fulfilled this scripture in your ears.
21And he began to say unto them--`To-day hath this writing been fulfilled in your ears;'
22And all gave testimony to him. And they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth. And they said: Is not this the son of Joseph?
22and all were bearing testimony to him, and were wondering at the gracious words that are coming forth out of his mouth, and they said, `Is not this the son of Joseph?'
23And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself. As great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.
23And he said unto them, `Certainly ye will say to me this simile, Physician, heal thyself; as great things as we heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country;'
24And he said: Amen I say to you that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
24and he said, `Verily I say to you--No prophet is accepted in his own country;
25In truth I say to You, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
25and of a truth I say to you, Many widows were in the days of Elijah, in Israel, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, when great famine came on all the land,
26And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.
26and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but--to Sarepta of Sidon, unto a woman, a widow;
27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
27and many lepers were in the time of Elisha the prophet, in Israel, and none of them was cleansed, but--Naaman the Syrian.'
28And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.
28And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, hearing these things,
29And they rose up and thrust him out of the city: and they brought him to the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
29and having risen, they put him forth without the city, and brought him unto the brow of the hill on which their city had been built--to cast him down headlong,
30But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.
30and he, having gone through the midst of them, went away.
31And he went down into Capharnaum, a city of Galilee: and there he taught them on the sabbath days.
31And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbaths,
32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech was with power.
32and they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority.
33And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean devil: and he cried out with a loud voice,
33And in the synagogue was a man, having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a great voice,
34Saying: Let us alone. What have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.
34saying, `Away, what--to us and to thee, Jesus, O Nazarene? thou didst come to destroy us; I have known thee who thou art--the Holy One of God.'
35And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Hold thy peace and go out of him. And when the devil had thrown him into the midst, he went out of him and hurt him not at all.
35And Jesus did rebuke him, saying, `Be silenced, and come forth out of him;' and the demon having cast him into the midst, came forth from him, having hurt him nought;
36And there came fear upon all; and they talked among themselves, saying: What word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out?
36and amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together, with one another, saying, `What <FI>is<Fi> this word, that with authority and power he doth command the unclean spirits, and they come forth?'
37And the fame of him was published into every place of the country.
37and there was going forth a fame concerning him to every place of the region round about.
38And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever: and they besought him for her.
38And having risen out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon, and the mother-in-law of Simon was pressed with a great fever, and they did ask him about her,
39And standing over her, he commanded the fever: and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.
39and having stood over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her, and presently, having risen, she was ministering to them.
40And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them to him. But he, laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.
40And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had any ailing with manifold sicknesses, brought them unto him, and he on each one of them <FI>his<Fi> hands having put, did heal them.
41And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak; for they knew that he was Christ.
41And demons also were coming forth from many, crying out and saying--`Thou art the Christ, the Son of God;' and rebuking, he did not suffer them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
42And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place: and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him. And they stayed him that should not depart from them.
42And day having come, having gone forth, he went on to a desert place, and the multitudes were seeking him, and they came unto him, and were staying him--not to go on from them,
