What Luke 17:14 means

Jesus sees them and commands them to go show themselves to the priests, the proper step under the Law for those cleansed of leprosy. He does not first heal them visibly; instead, He calls them to act in faith on His word. As they obey and go, they are cleansed. The healing arrives along the road of obedience, highlighting that genuine faith expresses itself in doing what Jesus says even before seeing results. The command honors God’s established means of restoration while also revealing Jesus’ sovereign initiative. His word, trusted and followed, brings new life and reintegration to those who had been cut off.

Context

This verse answers the lepers’ plea (verse 13) and advances the story to its turning point: healing occurs during their obedient journey. Next, attention shifts from the group to one individual who, seeing he is healed, returns to loudly glorify God and give thanks at Jesus’ feet (verses 15–16). Jesus will then pose searching questions about the missing nine (verses 17–18) and declare the Samaritan’s faith to have made him whole (verse 19), underscoring the importance of grateful trust over mere ritual compliance.

v.13and they lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

v.14This passage

v.15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, with a loud voice glorifying God;
