1Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it (as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king), and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

1And it cometh to pass, when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heareth that Joshua hath captured Ai, and doth devote it (as he had done to Jericho and to her king so he hath done to Ai and to her king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon have made peace with Israel, and are in their midst, --

1When Adonisedec, king of Jerusalem, had heard these things, to wit, that Joshua had taken Hai, and had destroyed it, (for as he had done to Jericho and the king thereof, so did he to Hai and its king) and that the Gabaonites were gone over to Israel, and were their confederates,

2that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

2that they are greatly afraid, because Gibeon <FI>is<Fi> a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it <FI>is<Fi> greater than Ai, and all its men--heroes.

2He was exceedingly afraid. For Gabaon was a great city, and one of the royal cities, and greater than the town of Hai, and all its fighting men were most valiant.

3Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

3And Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sendeth unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

3Therefore Adonisedec, king of Jerusalem, sent to Oham, king of Hebron, and to Pharam, king of Jerimoth, and to Japhia, king of Lachis, and to Dabir, king of Eglon, saying:

4Come up unto me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

4`Come up unto me, and help me, and we smite Gibeon, for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the sons of Israel.'

4Come up to me, and bring help, that we may take Gabaon, because it hath gone over to Joshua, and to the children of Israel.

5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

5And five kings of the Amorite (the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon) are gathered together, and go up, they and all their camps, and encamp against Gibeon, and fight against it.

5So the five kings of the Amorrhites being assembled together, went up: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jerimoth, the king of Lachis, the king of Eglon, they and their armies, and camped about Gabaon, laying siege to it.

6And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us.

6And the men of Gibeon send unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, `Let not thy hand cease from thy servants; come up unto us <FI>with<Fi> haste, and give safety to us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorite, dwelling in the hill-country, have been assembled against us.'

6But the inhabitants of the city of Gabaon, which was besieged, sent to Joshua, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him: Withdraw not thy hands from helping thy servants: come up quickly, and save us, and bring us succour: for all the kings of the Amorrhites, who dwell in the mountains, are gathered together against us.

7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

7And Joshua goeth up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, even all the mighty men of valour.

7And Joshua went up from Galgal, and all the army of the warriors with him, most valiant men.

8And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

8And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Be not afraid of them, for into thy hand I have given them, there doth not stand a man of them in thy presence.'

8But the Lord said to Joshua: Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands: none of them shall be able to stand against thee.

9Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; for he went up from Gilgal all the night.

9And Joshua cometh in unto them suddenly (all the night he hath gone up from Gilgal),

9So Joshua going up from Galgal all the night, came upon them suddenly.

10And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

10and Jehovah doth crush them before Israel, and it smiteth them--a great smiting--at Gibeon, and pursueth them the way of the ascent of Beth-Horon, and smiteth them unto Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

10And the Lord troubled them, at the sight of Israel: and he slew them with a great slaughter, in Gabaon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent to Bethoron, and cut them off all the way to Azeca and Maceda.

11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

11And it cometh to pass, in their fleeing from the face of Israel--they <FI>are<Fi> in the descent of Beth-Horon--and Jehovah hath cast upon them great stones out of the heavens, unto Azekah, and they die; more are they who have died by the hailstones than they whom the sons of Israel have slain by the sword.

11And when they were fleeing from the children of Israel, and were in the descent of Bethoron, the Lord cast down upon them great stones from heaven, as far as Azeca: and many more were killed with the hailstones, than were slain by the swords of the children of Israel,

12Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

12Then speaketh Joshua to Jehovah in the day of Jehovah's giving up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he saith, before the eyes of Israel, `Sun--in Gibeon stand still; and moon--in the valley of Ajalon;'

12Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, in the day that he delivered the Amorrhite in the sight of the children of Israel, and he said before them: Move not, O sun, toward Gabaon, nor thou, O moon, toward the valley of Ajalon.

13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

13and the sun standeth still, and the moon hath stood--till the nation taketh vengeance <FI>on<Fi> its enemies; is it not written on the Book of the Upright, `and the sun standeth in the midst of the heavens, and hath not hasted to go in--as a perfect day?'

13And the sun and the moon stood still, till the people revenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of the just? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down the space of one day.

14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

14And there hath not been like that day before it or after it, for Jehovah's hearkening to the voice of a man; for Jehovah is fighting for Israel.

14There was not before, nor after, so long a day, the Lord obeying the voice of a man, and fighting for Israel.

15And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

15And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.

15And Joshua returned, with all Israel, into the camp of Galgal.

16And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

16And these five kings flee, and are hidden in a cave at Makkedah,

16For the five kings were fled, and had hid themselves in a cave of the city of Maceda.

17And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

17and it is declared to Joshua, saying, `The five kings have been found hidden in a cave at Makkedah.'

17And it was told Joshua, that the five kings were found hid in a cave of the city of Maceda.

18And Joshua said, Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them:

18And Joshua saith, `Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and appoint over it men to watch them;

18And he commanded them that were with him, saying: Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and set careful men to keep them shut up:

19but stay not ye; pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God hath delivered them into your hand.

19and ye, stand not, pursue after your enemies, and ye have smitten the hindmost of them; suffer them not to go in unto their cities, for Jehovah your God hath given them into your hand.'

19And stay you not, but pursue after the enemies, and kill all the hindermost of them as they flee, and do not suffer them whom the Lord God hath delivered into your hands, to shelter themselves in their cities.

20And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

20And it cometh to pass, when Joshua and the sons of Israel finish to smite them--a very great smiting, till they are consumed, and the remnant who have remained of them go in unto the fenced cities,

20So the enemies being slain with a great slaughter, and almost utterly consumed, they that were able to escape from Israel, entered into fenced cities.

21that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

21that all the people turn back to the camp, unto Joshua, <FI>at<Fi> Makkedah, in peace; none moved sharply his tongue against the sons of Israel.

21And all the army returned to Joshua, in Maceda, where the camp then was, in good health, and without the loss of any one: and no man durst move his tongue against the children of Israel.

22Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings unto me out of the cave.

22And Joshua saith, `Open ye the mouth of the cave, and bring out unto me these five kings from the cave;'

22And Joshua gave orders, saying: Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth to me the five kings that lie hid therein.

23And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

23and they do so, and bring out unto him these five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

23And the ministers did as they were commanded: and they brought out to him the five kings out of the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jerimoth, the king of Lachis, the king of Eglon.

24And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

24And it cometh to pass, when they bring out these kings unto Joshua, that Joshua calleth unto every man of Israel, and saith unto the captains of the men of war, who have gone with him, `Draw near, set your feet on the necks of these kings;' and they draw near, and set their feet on their necks.

24And when they were brought out to him, he called all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the army that were with him: Go, and set your feet on the necks of these kings. And when they had gone, and put their feet upon the necks of them lying under them,

25And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

25And Joshua saith unto them, `Fear not, nor be affrighted; be strong and courageous; for thus doth Jehovah do to all your enemies with whom ye are fighting;'

25He said again to them: Fear not, neither be ye dismayed, take courage, and be strong: for so will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom you fight.

26And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

26and Joshua smiteth them afterwards, and putteth them to death, and hangeth them on five trees; and they are hanging on the trees till the evening.

26And Joshua struck, and slew them, and hanged them upon five gibbets; and they hung until the evening.

27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

27And it cometh to pass, at the time of the going in of the sun, Joshua hath commanded, and they take them down from off the trees, and cast them unto the cave where they had been hid, and put great stones on the mouth of the cave till this very day.

27And when the sun was down, he commanded the soldiers to take them down from the gibbets. And after they were taken down, they cast them into the cave, where they had lain hid, and put great stones at the mouth thereof, which remain until this day.

28And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

28And Makkedah hath Joshua captured on that day, and he smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and its king he hath devoted, them and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it--he hath not left a remnant; and he doth to the king of Makkedah as he did to the king of Jericho.

28The same day Joshua took Maceda, and destroyed it with the edge of the sword, and killed the king and all the inhabitants thereof: he left not in it the least remains. And he did to the king of Maceda, as he had done to the king of Jericho.

29And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

29And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah <FI>to<Fi> Libnah, and fighteth with Libnah;

29And he passed from Maceda with all Israel to Lebna, and fought against it:

30and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

30and Jehovah giveth also it into the hand of Israel, and its king, and it smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it--it left not in it a remnant; and it doth to its king as it did to the king of Jericho.

30And the Lord delivered it with the king thereof into the hands of Israel: and they destroyed the city with the edge of the sword, and all the inhabitants thereof. They left not in it any remains. And they did to the king of Lebna, as they had done to the king of Jericho.

31And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

31And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encampeth against it, and fighteth against it;

31From Lebna he passed unto Lachis, with all Israel: and investing it with his army, besieged it.

32and Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

32And Jehovah giveth Lachish into the hand of Israel, and it captureth it on the second day, and smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it, according to all that it did to Libnah.

32And the Lord delivered Lachis into the hands of Israel, and he took it the following day, and put it to the sword, and every soul that was in it, as he had done to Lebna.

33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

33Than hath Horam king of Gezer come up to help Lachish, and Joshua smiteth him and his people, till he hath not left to him a remnant.

33At that time Horam, king of Gazer, came up to succour Lachis: and Joshua slew him with all his people so as to leave none alive.

34And Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, unto Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;

34And Joshua passeth over, and all Israel with him, from Lachish to Eglon, and they encamp against it, and fight against it,

34And he passed from Lachis to Eglon, and surrounded it,

35and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

35and capture it on that day, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it on that day he hath devoted, according to all that he did to Lachish.

35And took it the same day: and put to the sword all the souls that were in it, according to all that he had done to Lachis.

36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

36And Joshua goeth up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fight against it,

36He went up also with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron, and fought against it:

37and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

37and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it--he hath not left a remnant--according to all that he did to Eglon--and doth devote it, and every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it.

37Took it, and destroyed it with the edge of the sword: the king also thereof, and all the towns of that country, and all the souls that dwelt in it: he left not therein any remains: as he had done to Eglon, so did he also to Hebron, putting to the sword all that he found in it.

38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it:

38And Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fighteth against it,

38Returning from thence to Dabir,

39and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king thereof.

39and captureth it, and its king, and all its cities, and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and devote every person who <FI>is<Fi> in it--he hath not left a remnant; as he did to Hebron so he did to Debir, and to its king, and as he did to Libnah, and to its king.

39He took it, and destroyed it: the king also thereof, and all the towns round about, he destroyed with the edge of the sword: he left not in it any remains: as he had done to Hebron and Lebna, and to their kings, so did he to Dabir, and to the king thereof.

40So Joshua smote all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded.

40And Joshua smiteth all the land of the hill-country, and of the south, and of the low-country, and of the springs, and all their kings--he hath not left a remnant, and all that doth breathe he hath devoted, as Jehovah, God of Israel, commanded.

40So Joshua conquered all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the plain, and of Asedoth, with their kings: he left not any remains therein, but slew all that breathed, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

41And Joshua smiteth them from Kadesh-Barnea, even unto Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, even unto Gibeon;

41From Cadesbarne even to Gaza. All the land of Gosen even to Gabaon,

42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

42and all these kings and their land hath Joshua captured <FI>at<Fi> one time, for Jehovah, God of Israel, is fighting for Israel.

42And all their kings, and their lands he took and wasted at one onset: for the Lord the God of Israel fought for him.

43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

43and Joshua turneth back, and all Israel with him, unto the camp at Gilgal.

43And he returned with all Israel to the place of the camp in Galgal.
