Job 5

1Pray, call, is there any to answer thee? And unto which of the holy ones dost thou turn?

1Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

1Call now, if there be any that will answer thee, and turn to some of the saints.

1Give now a cry for help; is there anyone who will give you an answer? and to which of the holy ones will you make your prayer?

2For provocation slayeth the perverse, And envy putteth to death the simple,

2For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.

2Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one.

2For wrath is the cause of death to the foolish, and he who has no wisdom comes to his end through passion.

3I--I have seen the perverse taking root, And I mark his habitation straightway,

3I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

3I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately.

4Far are his sons from safety, And they are bruised in the gate, And there is no deliverer.

5Whose harvest the hungry doth eat, And even from the thorns taketh it, And the designing swallowed their wealth.

5Whose harvest the hungry shall eat, and the armed man shall take him by violence, and the thirsty shall drink up his riches.

5Their produce is taken by him who has no food, and their grain goes to the poor, and he who is in need of water gets it from their spring.

6For sorrow cometh not forth from the dust, Nor from the ground springeth up misery.

6For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

6Nothing upon earth is done without a cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground.

7For man to misery is born, And the sparks go high to fly.

7But trouble is man's fate from birth, as the flames go up from the fire.

8Yet I--I inquire for God, And for God I give my word,

8But as for me I will seek untoGod, and untoGod commit my cause;

8Wherefore I will pray to the Lord, and address my speech to God:

9Doing great things, and there is no searching. Wonderful, till there is no numbering.

9Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;

9Who does great things outside our knowledge, wonders without number:

10Who is giving rain on the face of the land, And is sending waters on the out-places.

10Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;

10Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters:

10Who gives rain on the earth, and sends water on the fields:

11To set the low on a high place, And the mourners have been high <FI>in<Fi> safety.

11Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.

11Who setteth up the humble on high, and comforteth with health those that mourn.

11Lifting up those who are low, and putting the sad in a safe place;

12Making void thoughts of the subtile, And their hands do not execute wisdom.

12He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.

12Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun:

12Who makes the designs of the wise go wrong, so that they are unable to give effect to their purposes.

13Capturing the wise in their subtilty, And the counsel of wrestling ones was hastened,

13He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:

13Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked:

13He takes the wise in their secret designs, and the purposes of the twisted are cut off suddenly.

14By day they meet darkness, And as night--they grope at noon.

14They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.

14They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night.

14In the daytime it becomes dark for them, and in the sunlight they go feeling about as if it was night.

15And He saveth the wasted from their mouth, And from a strong hand the needy,

15And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

15But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent.

15But he keeps safe from their sword those who have no father, and the poor from the power of the strong.

16And there is hope to the poor, And perverseness hath shut her mouth.

16So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.

16And to the needy there shall be hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth.

16So the poor man has hope, and the mouth of the evil-doer is stopped.

17Lo, the happiness of mortal man, God doth reprove him: And the chastisement of the Mighty despise not,

17Behold, happy is the man whomGod correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.

17Blessed is the man whom God correcteth: refuse not, therefore, the chastising of the Lord.

17Truly, that man is happy who has training from the hand of God: so do not let your heart be shut to the teaching of the Ruler of all.

18For He doth pain, and He bindeth up, He smiteth, and His hands heal.

18For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

18For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal.

18For after his punishment he gives comfort, and after wounding, his hands make you well.

19In six distresses He delivereth thee, And in seven evil striketh not on thee.

19He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

19In six troubles he shall deliver thee, and in the seventh, evil shall not touch thee.

19He will keep you safe from six troubles, and in seven no evil will come near you.

20In famine He hath redeemed thee from death, And in battle from the hands of the sword.

20In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

20In famine he shall deliver thee from death; and in battle, from the hand of the sword.

20When there is need of food he will keep you from death, and in war from the power of the sword.

21When the tongue scourgeth thou art hid, And thou art not afraid of destruction, When it cometh.

21Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

21Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not fear calamity when it cometh.

21He will keep you safe from the evil tongue; and you will have no fear of wasting when it comes.

22At destruction and at hunger thou mockest, And of the beast of the earth, Thou art not afraid.

22At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.

22In destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: and thou shalt not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

22You will make sport of destruction and need, and will have no fear of the beasts of the earth.

23(For with sons of the field <FI>is<Fi> thy covenant, And the beast of the field Hath been at peace with thee.)

23For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

23But thou shalt have a covenant with the stones of the lands, and the beasts of the earth shall be at peace with thee.

23For you will be in agreement with the stones of the earth, and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.

24And thou hast known that thy tent <FI>is<Fi> peace, And inspected thy habitation, and errest not,

24And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.

24And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is in peace, and visiting thy beauty, thou shalt not sin.

24And you will be certain that your tent is at peace, and after looking over your property you will see that nothing is gone.

25And hast known that numerous <FI>is<Fi> Thy seed, And thine offspring as the herb of the earth;

25And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.

25Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy offspring like the grass of the earth.

25You will be certain that your seed will be great, and your offspring like the plants of the earth.

26Thou comest in full age unto the grave, As the going up of a stalk in its season.

26Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.

26Thou shalt enter into the grave in abundance, as a heap of wheat is brought in its season.

26You will come to your last resting-place in full strength, as the grain is taken up to the crushing-floor in its time.

27Lo, this--we searched it out--it <FI>is<Fi> right, hearken; And thou, know for thyself!

27Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.

27Behold, this is even so, as we have searched out: which thou having heard, consider it thoroughly in thy mind.

27See, we have made search with care, and it is so; it has come to our ears; see that you take note of it for yourself.
