Job 2

1Again it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan came also among them to present himself before Jehovah.

1And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst to station himself by Jehovah.

1And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came amongst them, and stood in his sight,

1And there was a day when the sons of the gods came together before the Lord, and the Satan came with them.

2And Jehovah said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

2And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence camest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down in it.'

2That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou? And he answered, and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.

2And the Lord said to the Satan, Where do you come from? And the Satan said in answer, From wandering this way and that on the earth, and walking about on it.

3And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

3And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart unto My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God and turning aside from evil? and still he is keeping hold on his integrity, and thou dost move Me against him to swallow him up for nought!'

3And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant, Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause.

3And the Lord said to the Satan, Have you taken note of my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a man without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil? and he still keeps his righteousness, though you have been moving me to send destruction on him without cause.

4And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

4And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `A skin for a skin, and all that a man hath he doth give for his life.

4And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin; and all that a man hath, he will give for his life:

4And the Satan said in answer to the Lord, Skin for skin, all a man has he will give for his life.

5But put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

5Yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike unto his bone and unto his flesh--if not: unto Thy face he doth bless Thee!'

5But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt see that he will bless thee to thy face.

5But now, if you only put your hand on his bone and his flesh, he will certainly be cursing you to your face.

6And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.

6And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, he <FI>is<Fi> in thy hand; only his life take care of.'

6And the Lord said to Satan: Behold, he is in thy hand, but yet save his life.

6And the Lord said to the Satan, See, he is in your hands, only do not take his life.

7So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

7And the Adversary goeth forth from the presence of Jehovah, and smiteth Job with a sore ulcer from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

7So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:

7And the Satan went out from before the Lord, and sent on Job an evil disease covering his skin from his feet to the top of his head.

8And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself therewith; and he sat among the ashes.

8And he taketh to him a potsherd to scrape himself with it, and he is sitting in the midst of the ashes.

8And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.

8And he took a broken bit of a pot, and, seated in the dust, was rubbing himself with the sharp edge of it.

9Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die.

9And his wife saith to him, `Still thou art keeping hold on thine integrity: bless God and die.'

9And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.

9And his wife said to him, Are you still keeping your righteousness? Say a curse against God, and put an end to yourself.

10But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

10And he saith unto her, `As one of the foolish women speaketh, thou speakest; yea, the good we receive from God, and the evil we do not receive.' In all this Job hath not sinned with his lips.

10And he said to her: Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women: If we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.

10And he said to her, You are talking like one of the foolish women. If we take the good God sends us, are we not to take the evil when it comes? In all this Job kept his lips from sin.

11Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him.

11And three of the friends of Job hear of all this evil that hath come upon him, and they come in each from his place--Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite--and they are met together to come in to bemoan him, and to comfort him;

11Now when Job's three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Eliphaz, the Themanite, and Baldad, the Suhite, and Sophar, the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, and comfort him.

11And Job's three friends had word of all this evil which had come on him. And they came every one from his place, Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. So they came together to a meeting-place, in order that they might go and make clear to Job their grief for him, and give him comfort.

12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his robe, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

12and they lift up their eyes from afar and have not discerned him, and they lift up their voice and weep, and rend each his robe, and sprinkle dust on their heads--heavenward.

12And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out, they wept, and rending their garments, they sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

12And lifting up their eyes when they were still far off, it did not seem that the man they saw was Job because of the change in him. And they gave way to bitter weeping, with signs of grief, and put dust on their heads.

13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

13And they sit with him on the earth seven days and seven nights, and there is none speaking unto him a word when they have seen that the pain hath been very great.

13And they sat with him on the ground seven day and seven nights and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.

13And they took their seats on the earth by his side for seven days and seven nights: but no one said a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.
