John 20

1Now on the firstdayof the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, while it was yet dark, unto the tomb, and seeth the stone taken away from the tomb.

1Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.

2She runneth therefore, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they have laid him.

2She ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

3Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb.

3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.

4And they ran both together: and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb;

4The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first.

5and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths lying; yet entered he not in.

5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there, but he did not go inside.

6Simon Peter therefore also cometh, following him, and entered into the tomb; and he beholdeth the linen cloths lying,

6Then Simon Peter arrived behind him and went straight into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying there,

7and the napkin, that was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself.

7as well as the cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. It was not lying with the other linen, but was folded up in a place by itself.

8Then entered in therefore the other disciple also, who came first to the tomb, and he saw, and believed.

8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.

9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

9They still did not understand from the Scriptures that Jesus had to rise from the dead.

10So the disciples went away again unto their own home.

10Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

11But Mary was standing without at the tomb weeping: so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb;

11But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb,

12and she beholdeth two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they have put him."

14When she had thus said, she turned herself back, and beholdeth Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

14After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize it was him.

15Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you put him, and I will go get him."

16Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turneth herself, and saith unto him in Hebrew, Rabboni; which is to say, Teacher.

16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means "Teacher").

17Jesus saith to her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended unto the Father: but go unto my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.

17Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

18Mary Magdalene cometh and telleth the disciples, I have seen the Lord; and that he had said these things unto her.

18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what he had said to her.

19When therefore it was evening, on that day, the firstdayof the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

19On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together with the doors locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

20And when he had said this, he showed unto them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord.

20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21Jesus therefore said to them again, Peace be unto you: as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit:

22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

23whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

23If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

24But Thomas, one of the twelve disciples (called the Twin), was not with them when Jesus came.

25The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe."

26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

26Eight days later, the disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"

27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and see my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29Jesus saith unto him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

30Many other signs therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book:

30Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.

31but these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye may have life in his name.

31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
