What John 18:12 means
Following Jesus' peaceful submission, the arresting party—composed of the Roman cohort, their commander, and the Jewish officers—seize Jesus. They proceed to bind Him, signifying His capture and the beginning of His official custody. This act marks the undeniable transition from Jesus' freedom to His formal arrest, fulfilling the predetermined plan for His suffering and ultimate sacrifice. It removes Him from the setting of the garden.

Context
This verse recounts the physical action of Jesus' arrest, occurring directly after His rebuke of Peter and His declaration of submission to the Father's will. It shows the immediate consequence of His surrender, moving the narrative from the garden scene to His official detainment. This leads directly to His initial trial before Annas.
