What John 1:33 means
John explains that God, who sent him to baptize with water, had given him a clear sign: the one upon whom he would see the Spirit descend and remain would be the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. This divine instruction enabled John to positively identify Jesus. It distinguishes Jesus' superior baptism, which imparts the Holy Spirit, from John's preparatory water baptism, further elevating Jesus' messianic role as the giver of the Spirit.
John 1:33 in context
John 1 — The Word Made Flesh
John lifts the curtain higher than any other Gospel. Before there was a Bethlehem, there was the Word — with God, who was God, by whom all things were made. The same Word who was the agent of creation became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. John the Baptist points him out as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world; the first disciples follow him; Nathanael confesses him as the Son of God and King of Israel. The eternal becomes near enough to touch.

Context
This verse logically follows John's account of seeing the Spirit descend (v.32), providing the divine instruction that made the sign intelligible to him. It clarifies that John's recognition of Jesus was not an independent conclusion but directly guided by God's prior revelation. This explanation solidifies the divine validation of Jesus' identity and sets up the dramatic conclusion of John's testimony, where he definitively proclaims Jesus as the Son of God, based on this spiritual leading.
