1Of the children of Ammon. Thus saith Jehovah: Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth Malcam possess Gad, and his people dwell in the cities thereof?
1Concerning the people of Ammon, this is what the LORD says: Does Israel have no sons? Has he no heir? Why then has the god Malcam taken over the land of Gad, and why do his people live in its cities?
2Therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it shall become a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel possess them that did possess him, saith Jehovah.
2Therefore, look, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will cause the shout of battle to be heard against Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a pile of ruins, and the surrounding villages will be burned with fire. Then Israel will take back the land from those who took it from them, says the LORD.
3Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste; cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth: lament, and run to and fro among the fences; for Malcam shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.
3Cry out, Heshbon, for Ai is destroyed! Shout, you daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn; run back and forth inside the walls. For your god Malcam will be sent into exile, along with his priests and his officials.
4Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
4Why do you brag about your valleys—your fertile valleys, you rebellious daughter? You trust in your riches and say, 'Who would ever dare to attack me?'
5Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, from all that are round about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth, and there shall be none to gather together the fugitives.
5Look, I am bringing terror upon you from every side, says the Lord, the LORD of Heaven's Armies. Every one of you will be driven out headlong, and no one will gather the fugitives together.
6But afterward I will bring back the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith Jehovah.
6But later on, I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, says the LORD.
7Of Edom. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?
7Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies says: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? Has good advice vanished from the smart people? Has their wisdom completely disappeared?
8Flee ye, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I shall visit him.
8Turn and run! Hide in deep caves, residents of Dedan! For I will bring disaster upon the descendants of Esau at the time I punish them.
9If grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, would they not destroy till they had enough?
9If harvesters came to pick your grapes, wouldn't they leave a few behind? If thieves came at night, wouldn't they only take what they wanted?
10But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is destroyed, and his brethren, and his neighbors; and he is not.
10But I have stripped Esau bare. I have uncovered his hiding places so he cannot hide himself. His children, his relatives, and his neighbors are destroyed; he is no more.
11Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
11Leave your orphans to me; I will keep them alive. Your widows can also depend on me.
12For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, they to whom it pertained not to drink of the cup shall assuredly drink; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink.
12For this is what the LORD says: If even those who did not deserve to drink from the cup of judgment must drink it, do you think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished; you must drink it.
13For I have sworn by myself, saith Jehovah, that Bozrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
13I have sworn by my own name, says the LORD, that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a joke, a ruin, and a curse. All its towns will be ruins forever.
14I have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
14I have heard a message from the LORD. A messenger has been sent to the nations to say, 'Gather together! Come against her! Get ready for battle!'
15For, behold, I have made thee small among the nations, and despised among men.
15See, I will make you small among the nations and despised by everyone.
16As for thy terribleness, the pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.
16The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the cracks of the rocks and occupy the heights of the hill. Even if you build your nest as high as an eagle's, I will bring you down from there, says the LORD.
17And Edom shall become an astonishment: every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
17Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by will be shocked and will whistle in surprise at all its wounds.
18As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, no man shall dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.
18Just as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed along with their neighboring towns, says the LORD, no one will live there anymore. No human being will stay in it.
19Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?
19Like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan to a secure pasture, I will suddenly chase Edom from her land. I will appoint whoever I choose over her. For who is like me? Who can challenge me? What leader can stand against me?
20Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.
20Therefore, listen to the plan that the LORD has made against Edom, and what he intends to do to those who live in Teman: Even the little children will be dragged away; he will completely destroy their home because of them.
21The earth trembleth at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise whereof is heard in the Red Sea.
21The earth shakes at the sound of their fall; their cry is heard as far away as the Red Sea.
22Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread out his wings against Bozrah: and the heart of the mighty men of Edom at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
22Look! An enemy will swoop down like an eagle and spread his wings over Bozrah. On that day, the hearts of Edom’s soldiers will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
23Of Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings, they are melted away: there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
23Concerning Damascus: The cities of Hamath and Arpad are confused because they have heard bad news. They are discouraged; they are like a troubled sea that cannot be calm.
24Damascus is waxed feeble, she turneth herself to flee, and trembling hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.
24Damascus has become weak; she turned to run away, and panic gripped her. Anguish and pain have seized her, like a woman giving birth.
25How is the city of praise not forsaken, the city of my joy?
25Why has the famous city not been abandoned, the city that was my joy?
26Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah of hosts.
26Therefore, her young men will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day, says the LORD of Heaven's Armies.
27And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.
27I will set fire to the walls of Damascus; it will burn up the palaces of Ben-hadad.
28Of Kedar, and of the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote. Thus saith Jehovah: Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and destroy the children of the east.
28Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon defeated, this is what the LORD says: Rise up, attack Kedar, and destroy the people of the East.
29Their tents and their flocks shall they take; they shall carry away for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Terror on every side!
29Their tents and their flocks will be taken. Their tent curtains, all their goods, and their camels will be carried off. People will shout to them, 'Terror is on every side!'
30Flee ye, wander far off, dwell in the depths, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith Jehovah; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.
30Run away! Wander far off! Hide in deep caves, you people of Hazor, says the LORD. For King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has made a plan against you and has decided to destroy you.
31Arise, get you up unto a nation that is at ease, that dwelleth without care, saith Jehovah; that have neither gates nor bars, that dwell alone.
31Rise up and attack a nation that is at ease, that lives securely, says the LORD. They have no gates or bars; they live all by themselves.
32And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter unto all winds them that have the corners of their hair cut off; and I will bring their calamity from every side of them, saith Jehovah.
32Their camels will be taken as loot, and their large herds as plunder. I will scatter to the winds those who clip the hair on their temples, and I will bring disaster on them from every side, says the LORD.
33And Hazor shall be a dwelling-place of jackals, a desolation for ever: no man shall dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.
33Hazor will become a home for jackals, a wasteland forever. No one will live there; no human being will stay in it.
34The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
34This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah:
35Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.
35This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies says: Look, I will break the bow of Elam, the source of their power.
36And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.
36I will bring the four winds from the four corners of heaven against Elam. I will scatter them to all those winds, and there will not be a nation where the refugees from Elam do not go.
37And I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life; and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith Jehovah; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
37I will cause Elam to be terrified of their enemies—those who want to kill them. I will bring disaster upon them, even my fierce anger, says the LORD. I will send the sword to chase them until I have destroyed them.
