Judges 8

1And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

1And the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What <FI>is<Fi> this thing thou hast done to us--not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?' and they strive with him severely;

1And the men of Ephraim said to him: What is this that thou meanest to do, that thou wouldst not call us, when thou wentest to fight against Madian? And they chid him sharply, and almost offered violence.

2And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

2and he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

2And he answered them: What could I have done like to that which you have done? Is not one bunch of grapes of Ephraim better than the vintages of Abiezer?

3God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

3Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?' Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

3The Lord hath delivered into your hands the princes of Madian, Oreb and Zeb: what could I have done like to what you have done? And when he had said this, their spirit was appeased, with which they swelled against him.

4And Gideon came to the Jordan, andpassed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

4And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who <FI>are<Fi> with him--wearied, and pursuing,

4And when Gedeon was come to the Jordan, he passed over it with the three hundred men that were with him: who were so weary that they could not pursue after them that fled.

5And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

5and he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who <FI>are<Fi> at my feet, for they <FI>are<Fi> wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.'

5And he said to the men of Soccoth: Give, I beseech you, bread to the people that is with me, for they are faint: that we may pursue Zebee, and Salmana, the kings of Madian.

6And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

6And the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?'

6The princes of Soccoth answered: Peradventure the palms of the hands of Zebee and Salmana are in thy hand, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to thy army.

7And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

7And Gideon saith, `Therefore--in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand--I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.'

7And he said to them: When the Lord therefore shall have delivered Zebee and Salmana into my hands, I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the desert.

8And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

8And he goeth up thence <FI>to<Fi> Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

8And going up from thence, he came to Phanuel: and he spoke the like things to the men of that place. And they also answered him, as the men of Soccoth had answered.

9And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

9And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.'

9He said, therefore, to them also: When I shall return a conqueror in peace, I will destroy this tower.

10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

10And Zebah and Zalmunna <FI>are<Fi> in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling <FI>are<Fi> a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

10But Zebee and Salmana were resting with all their army. For fifteen thousand men were left of all the troops of the eastern people, and one hundred and twenty thousand warriors that drew the sword were slain.

11And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

11And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;

11And Gedeon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents, on the east of Nobe and Jegbaa, and smote the camp of the enemies, who were secure, and suspected no hurt.

12And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

12and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.

12And Zebee and Salmana fled, and Gedeon pursued and took them, all their host being put in confusion.

13And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

13And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,

13And returning from the battle before the sun rising,

14And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.

14and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders--seventy and seven men.

14He took a boy of the men of Soccoth: and he asked him the names of the princes and ancients of Soccoth, and he described unto him seventy-seven men.

15And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

15And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who <FI>are<Fi> wearied bread?'

15And he came to Soccoth, and said to them: Behold Zebee, and Salmana, concerning whom you upbraided me, saying: Peradventure the hands of Zebee and Salmana are in thy hands, and therefore thou demandest that we should give bread to the men that are weary and faint.

16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

16And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,

16So he took the ancients of the city, and thorns and briers of the desert, and tore them with the same, and cut in pieces the men of Soccoth.

17And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

17and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.

17And he demolished the tower of Phanuel, and slew the men of the city.

18Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

18And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How--the men whom ye slew in Tabor?' and they say, `As thou--so they, one--as the form of the king's sons.'

18And he said to Zebee and Salmana: What manner of men were they, whom you slew in Thabor? They answered: They were like thee, and one of them as the son of a king.

19And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

19And he saith, `My brethren--sons of my mother--they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive--I had not slain you.'

19He answered them: They were my brethren, the sons of my mother. As the Lord liveth, if you had saved them, I would not kill you.

20And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

20And he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;' and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he <FI>is<Fi> yet a youth.

20And he said to Jether, his eldest son: Arise, and slay them. But he drew not his sword: for he was afraid, being but yet a boy.

21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks.

21And Zebah saith--also Zalmunna--`Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man--his might;' and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which <FI>are<Fi> on the necks of their camels.

21And Zebee and Salmana said: Do thou rise and run upon us: because the strength of a man is according to his age: Gedeon rose up, and slew Zebee and Salmana: and he took the ornaments and bosses, with which the necks of the camels of kings are wont to be adorned.

22Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.

22And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.'

22And all the men of Israel said to Gedeon: Rule thou over us, and thy son, and thy son's son: because thou hast delivered us from the hand of Madian.

23And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.

23And Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.'

23And he said to them: I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you, but the Lord shall rule over you.

24And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

24And Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they <FI>are<Fi> Ishmaelites.'

24And he said to them: I desire one request of you: Give me the earlets of your spoils. For the Ismaelites were accustomed to wear golden earlets.

25And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.

25And they say, `We certainly give;' and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;

25They answered: We will give them most willingly. And spreading a mantle on the ground, they cast upon it the earlets of the spoils.

26And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

26and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred <FI>shekels<Fi> of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which <FI>are<Fi> on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which <FI>are<Fi> on the necks of their camels,

26And the weight of the earlets that he requested, was a thousand seven hundred sicles of gold, besides the ornaments, and jewels, and purple raiment, which the kings of Madian were wont to use, and besides the golden chains that were about the camels necks.

27And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

27and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.

27And Gedeon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city Ephra. And all Israel committed fornication with it, and it became a ruin to Gedeon, and to all his house.

28So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

28And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.

28But Madian was humbled before the children of Israel, neither could they any more lift up their heads: but the land rested for forty years, while Gedeon presided.

29And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

29And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,

29So Jerobaal, the son of Joas, went and dwelt in his own house:

30And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.

30and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;

30And he had seventy sons, who came out of his thigh, for he had many wives.

31And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

31and his concubine, who <FI>is<Fi> in Shechem, hath born to him--even she--a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.

31And his concubine, that he had in Sichem, bore him a son, whose name was Abimelech.

32And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

32And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.

32And Gedeon, the son of Joas died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father, in Ephra, of the family of Ezri.

33And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

33And it cometh to pass, when Gideon <FI>is<Fi> dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;

33But after Gedeon was dead, the children of Israel turned again, and committed fornication with Baalim. And they made a covenant with Baal, that he should be their god:

34And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

34and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,

34And they remembered not the Lord their God, who delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies round about:

35neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.

35neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal--Gideon--according to all the good which he did with Israel.

35Neither did they shew mercy to the house of Jerobaal Gedeon, according to all the good things he had done to Israel.
