1And Jehovah said unto me, Take thee a great tablet, and write upon it with the pen of a man, For Maher-shalal-hash-baz;
1The LORD said to me, 'Take a large scroll and write on it in plain letters: Maher-shalal-hash-baz.'
2and I will take unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
2'I will get reliable witnesses to record this: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.'
3And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said Jehovah unto me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
3Then I went to the prophetess, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. The LORD said to me, 'Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.'
4For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and, My mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.
4'Before the boy knows how to say "My father" or "My mother," the wealth of Damascus and the loot of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.'
6Forasmuch as this people have refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
6'Because these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and are glad about Rezin and the son of Remaliah,'
7now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the River, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory: and it shall come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks;
7'therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the Euphrates River—the king of Assyria with all his power. It will overflow all its channels and run over all its banks.'
8and it shall sweep onward into Judah; it shall overflow and pass through; it shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
8'It will pour into Judah, swirling and flooding until it reaches up to the neck. Its outspread wings will cover the entire width of your land, O Immanuel!'
9Make an uproar, O ye peoples, and be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and be broken in pieces.
9Prepare for battle, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Get ready for war and be shattered! Yes, prepare yourselves and be shattered!
10Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.
10Make your battle plans, but they will fail. Give your orders, but they will not happen, because God is with us.
11For Jehovah spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
11The LORD spoke to me with his strong hand on me, warning me not to follow the path of these people. He said:
12Say ye not, A conspiracy, concerning all whereof this people shall say, A conspiracy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be in dread thereof.
12'Do not call everything a conspiracy that these people call a conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be terrified by it.'
13Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
13'The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is the one you must regard as holy. He is the one you should fear; he is the one who should make you tremble.'
14And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
14'He will be a safe place. But for both houses of Israel, he will be a stone that makes people stumble and a rock that makes them fall. For the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare.'
15And many shall stumble thereon, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
15'Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken; they will be trapped and captured.'
16Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
16Tie up the scroll of the testimony and seal the law among my followers.
17And I will wait for Jehovah, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
17I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob. I will put my hope in him.
18Behold, I and the children whom Jehovah hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Jehovah of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion.
18Look, I and the children the LORD has given me are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, who lives on Mount Zion.
19And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits and unto the wizards, that chirp and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? on behalf of the living should they seek unto the dead?
19When people tell you, 'Consult the mediums and psychics who whisper and mutter,' shouldn’t a people instead consult their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?
20To the law and to the testimony! if they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.
20Look to God’s instructions and to the testimony! If people do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.
21And they shall pass through it, sore distressed and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and turn their faces upward:
21They will wander through the land, distressed and hungry. When they are starving, they will become angry; looking upward, they will curse their king and their God.
