Isaiah 6

1In the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple.

1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the hem of his robe filled the temple.

2Above him stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

2Seraphim stood above him, each having six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.

3And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is Jehovah of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

3They called out to one another, saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies; the whole earth is full of his glory."

4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

4The doorposts and thresholds shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.

5Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.

5Then I said, "It is over for me! I am ruined because I am a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies."

6Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs.

7and he touched my mouth with it, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin forgiven.

7He touched my mouth with it and said, "Look, this has touched your lips; your guilt is removed, and your sin is forgiven."

8And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I; send me.

8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" I replied, "Here I am; send me."

9And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

9He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Listen carefully, but do not understand; look closely, but do not perceive.'

10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.

10"Make the hearts of these people stubborn; plug their ears and shut their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn to me to be healed."

11Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until cities be waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land become utterly waste,

11Then I asked, "Lord, how long will this last?" He answered, "Until the cities are ruined and empty, the houses are deserted, and the land is completely destroyed,

12and Jehovah have removed men far away, and the forsaken places be many in the midst of the land.

12"until the LORD has sent the people far away, and the land is left largely abandoned.

13And if there be yet a tenth in it, it also shall in turn be eaten up: as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remaineth, when they are felled; so the holy seed is the stock thereof.

13"Even if a tenth of the people remain, the land will be burned again. But just as the stump remains when a terebinth or an oak tree is cut down, the holy seed will be the stump that remains."
