What Hebrews 9:28 means

In parallel with human destiny, Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many. His first coming dealt decisively with sin. He will appear a second time, not to address sin again, but for salvation to those who wait for Him. The first appearing secured atonement; the second will consummate redemption, bringing the faithful into its fullness. This verse holds together past accomplishment and future hope. Believers are called to wait—not anxiously, but expectantly—knowing that the One who bore their sins will return apart from sin’s issue to complete their salvation. The chapter closes with assurance: one sacrifice is enough, and one coming remains—for glory.

Context

Verse 28 concludes the chapter’s argument. After establishing the once-for-all nature of Christ’s sacrifice (verses 25–26) and the finality of human death and judgment (verse 27), it declares the two appearings of Christ: once to bear sin, and finally to bring salvation to those who wait for Him. This seals the contrast with the Old Covenant’s repeated rites and restricted access. The way into God’s presence is now open through Christ, and the story moves from shadow to substance, from annual remembrance to eternal redemption, from present cleansing to future consummation.
