1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, evenJesus;

1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, think carefully about Jesus, the messenger and high priest of the faith we profess.

2who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also was Moses in all his house.

2He was faithful to the God who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.

3For he hath been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by so much as he that built the house hath more honor than the house.

3But Jesus has been found worthy of much greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves more honor than the house itself.

4For every house is builded by some one; but he that built all things is God.

4Every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God.

5And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken;

5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to the things that would be spoken of later.

6but Christ as a son, over his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end.

6But Christ is faithful over God’s house as his Son. And we are his house, if we keep our courage and the hope we brag about firm until the end.

7Wherefore, even as the Holy Spirit saith, To-day if ye shall hear his voice,

7So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice,

8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

8do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,

9Where your fathers triedmeby proving me, And saw my works forty years.

9where your ancestors tested and tried me, even though for forty years they saw what I did.

10Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do always err in their heart: But they did not know my ways;

10That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.'

11As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

11So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

12Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God:

12Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that none of you has an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

13but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin:

13Instead, encourage each other every day, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by the trickery of sin.

14for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end:

14We have come to share in Christ, if we hold firmly to our original confidence until the very end.

15while it is said, To-day if ye shall hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

15As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."

16For who, when they heard, did provoke? nay, did not all they that came out of Egypt by Moses?

16Who were they who heard and rebelled? Weren't they all those Moses led out of Egypt?

17And with whom was he displeased forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

17And who was God angry with for forty years? Wasn't it those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that were disobedient?

18And who did God swear would never enter his rest if not those who disobeyed?

19And we see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

19So we see that they were unable to enter because of their lack of faith.
