What Hebrews 10:36 means

What they need is patience—endurance—so that after doing God’s will, they may receive the promise. The path from promise to fulfillment runs through perseverance. Doing God’s will is not a momentary act but a sustained course; endurance carries obedience to completion. The assurance is that God’s promise does await them, and it will be received in due time. This verse links the earlier theme of Christ doing God’s will (vv. 7–10) with the believer’s call to do God’s will in steadfastness, trusting that the same God who fulfilled redemption in Christ will also fulfill his promises to his people.

Context

Verse 36 complements the call to hold confidence (v. 35) by identifying endurance as the needed grace to obtain the promised reward after doing God’s will. The focus now shifts toward the future realization of God’s promises. Verses 37–38 will give scriptural assurance: the coming one will come soon, and the righteous live by faith rather than shrinking back. This sets the theological frame for perseverance, which leads directly into the climactic affirmation of verse 39 and prepares the way for the faith examples in the next chapter.

v.35Cast not away therefore your boldness, which hath great recompense of reward.

v.37For yet a very little while, He that cometh shall come, and shall not tarry.
