What Hebrews 10:17 means
The testimony continues: God promises, “their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” This is not divine forgetfulness but a commitment not to hold sins against his people. It expresses full remission—a settled, covenantal non-recollection grounded in Christ’s sacrifice. For consciences troubled by failure, this word is key: God will not bring forgiven sins back into account. The new covenant, therefore, is characterized by inward renewal and complete pardon. This double blessing removes both the power of sin within and the guilt of sin before God, providing stable assurance and motivating grateful obedience.

Context
Following the internal transformation promised in verse 16, verse 17 provides the complementary promise of total forgiveness. This completes the Spirit’s testimony to the new covenant blessings that Christ secured. Verse 18 will draw the decisive inference that where such remission exists, no more offering for sin remains. With the doctrinal foundation solid, the author will turn in verses 19–25 to exhort believers to enjoy their access to God, hold fast their hope, and stimulate one another to love, especially as “the day” approaches.
