1In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
1On the first day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius's reign, the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.
2Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, This people say, It is not the time for us to come, the time for Jehovah’s house to be built.
2The LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: These people are saying, 'The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD’s house.'
3Then came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,
3Then the LORD spoke through Haggai the prophet again:
4Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth waste?
4Is it right for you to live in luxury in your paneled houses while my house lies in ruins?
5Now therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.
5Now, this is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: Think carefully about what is happening to you.
6Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
6You have planted much, but harvested very little. You eat, but you are never full. You drink, but you are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as if you were putting them into a pocket full of holes.
7Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.
7This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: Think carefully about your ways.
8Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith Jehovah.
8Go up into the mountains, bring back timber, and rebuild my house. Then I will be pleased with it and be honored, says the LORD.
9Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith Jehovah of hosts. Because of my house that lieth waste, while ye run every man to his own house.
9You expected a large harvest, but it turned out to be small. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? asks the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. It is because my house lies in ruins while every one of you is busy working on your own house.
10Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholdeth its fruit.
10That is why the skies have withheld the dew and the earth has withheld its crops.
11And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.
11I called for a drought on the fields and the hills—a drought on your grain, your new wine, your olive oil, and everything the ground produces. It has affected the people, the animals, and all the results of your hard work.
12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Jehovah their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him; and the people did fear before Jehovah.
12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God. They listened to the words of Haggai the prophet, because the LORD their God had sent him, and the people showed great reverence for the LORD.
13Then spake Haggai Jehovah’s messenger in Jehovah’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith Jehovah.
13Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, gave the people this message from the LORD: 'I am with you, declares the LORD.'
14And Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of Jehovah of hosts, their God,
14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the rest of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, their God,
