Genesis 40

1After this, it came to pass, that two eunuchs, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, offended their lord.

1Now after these things the chief servant who had the care of the wine, and the chief bread-maker in Pharaoh's house, did something against Pharaoh's orders;

1And it came to pass after these things, [that] the cup-bearer of the king of Egypt and the baker offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2And Pharao being angry with them, (now the one was chief butler, the other chief baker,)

2And Pharaoh was angry with his two servants, with the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker;

2And Pharaoh was wroth with his two chamberlains — with the chief of the cup-bearers and with the chief of the bakers;

3He sent them to the prison of the commander of the soldiers, in which Joseph also was prisoner.

3And he put them in prison under the care of the captain of the army, in the same prison where Joseph himself was shut up.

3and he put them in custody into the house of the captain of the life-guard, into the tower-house, into the place where Joseph was imprisoned.

4But the keeper of the prison delivered them to Joseph, and he served them. Some little time passed, and they were kept in custody.

4And the captain put them in Joseph's care, and he did what was needed for them; and they were kept in prison for some time.

4And the captain of the life-guard appointed Joseph to them, that he should attend on them. And they were [several] days in custody.

5And they both dreamed a dream the same night, according to the interpretation agreeing to themselves:

5And these two had a dream on the same night; the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker of the king of Egypt, who were in prison, the two of them had dreams with a special sense.

5And they dreamed a dream, both of them in one night, each his dream, each according to the interpretation of his dream, the cup-bearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were imprisoned in the tower-house.

6And when Joseph was come into them in the morning, and saw them sad,

6And in the morning when Joseph came to them he saw that they were looking sad.

6And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and looked on them, and behold, they were sad.

7He asked them, saying: Why is your countenance sadder today than usual?

7And he said to the servants of Pharaoh who were in prison with him, Why are you looking so sad?

7And he asked Pharaoh's chamberlains that were with him in custody in his lord's house, saying, Why are your faces [so] sad to-day?

8They answered: We have dreamed a dream, and there is nobody to interpret it to us. And Joseph said to them: Doth not interpretation belong to God? Tell me what you have dreamed:

8Then they said to him, We have had a dream, and no one is able to give us the sense. And Joseph said, Does not the sense of dreams come from God? what was your dream?

8And they said to him, We have dreamt a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, [Do] not interpretations [belong] toGod? tell me [your dreams], I pray you.

9The chief butler first told his dream: I saw before me a vine,

9Then the chief wine-servant gave Joseph an account of his dream, and said, In my dream I saw a vine before me;

9Then the chief of the cup-bearers told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

10On which were three branches, which by little and little sent out buds, and after the blossoms brought forth ripe grapes:

10And on the vine were three branches; and it seemed as if it put out buds and flowers, and from them came grapes ready for cutting.

10and in the vine were three branches; and it was as though it budded: its blossoms shot forth, its clusters ripened into grapes.

11And the cup of Pharao was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into the cup which I held, and I gave the cup to Pharao.

11And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and crushing them into Pharaoh's cup, gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

11And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

12Joseph answered: This is the interpretation of the dream: The three branches, are yet three days:

12Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three branches are three days;

12And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days.

13After which Pharao will remember thy service, and will restore thee to thy former place: and thou shalt present him the cup according to thy office, as before thou was wont to do.

13After three days Pharaoh will give you honour, and put you back into your place, and you will give him his cup as you did before, when you were his wine-servant.

13In yet three days will Pharaoh lift up thy head and restore thee to thy place, and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his cup-bearer.

14Only remember me when it shall be well with thee, and do me this kindness: to put Pharao in mind to take me out of this prison:

14But keep me in mind when things go well for you, and be good to me and say a good word for me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison:

14Only bear a remembrance with thee of me when it goes well with thee, and deal kindly, I pray thee, with me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house;

15For I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here without any fault was cast into the dungeon.

15For truly I was taken by force from the land of the Hebrews; and I have done nothing for which I might be put in prison.

15for indeed I was stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

16The chief baker seeing that he had wisely interpreted the dream, said: I also dreamed a dream, That I had three baskets of meal upon my head:

16Now when the chief bread-maker saw that the first dream had a good sense, he said to Joseph, I had a dream; and in my dream there were three baskets of white bread on my head;

16And when the chief of the bakers saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head.

17And that in one basket which was uppermost, I carried all meats that are made by the art of baking, and that the birds ate out of it.

17And in the top basket were all sorts of cooked meats for Pharaoh; and the birds were taking them out of the baskets on my head.

17And in the uppermost basket there were all manner of victuals for Pharaoh that the baker makes, and the birds ate them out of the basket upon my head.

18Joseph answered: This is the interpretation of the dream: The three baskets, are yet three days:

18Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three baskets are three days;

18And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets are three days.

19After which Pharao will take thy head from thee, and hang thee on a cross, and the birds shall tear thy flesh.

19After three days Pharaoh will take you out of prison, hanging you on a tree, so that your flesh will be food for birds.

19In yet three days will Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and hang thee on a tree; and the birds will eat thy flesh from off thee.

20The third day after this was the birthday of Pharao: and he made a great feast for his servants, and at the banquet remembered the chief butler, and the chief baker.

20Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his servants; and he gave honour to the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker among the others.

20And it came to pass the third day — Pharaoh's birthday — that he made a feast to all his bondmen. And he lifted up the head of the chief of the cup-bearers, and the head of the chief of the bakers among his bondmen.

21And he restored the one to his place, to present him the cup:

21And he put the chief wine-servant back in his old place; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

21And he restored the chief of the cup-bearers to his office of cup-bearer again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

22The other he hanged on a gibbet, that the truth of the interpreter might be shewn.

22But the chief bread-maker was put to death by hanging, as Joseph had said.

22And he hanged the chief of the bakers, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23But the chief butler, when things prospered with him, forgot his interpreter.

23But the wine-servant did not keep Joseph in mind or give a thought to him.

23But the chief of the cup-bearers did not remember Joseph, and forgot him.
