1And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah.
1Adam had sexual relations with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, 'With the help of the LORD, I have brought forth a man.'
2And again she bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel became a shepherd who looked after sheep, but Cain became a farmer who worked the ground.
3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah.
3In the course of time, Cain brought some of the crops he grew as an offering to the LORD.
4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
4Abel also brought an offering. He brought the best parts from some of the firstborn animals of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
5but he did not look with favor on Cain and his offering. Cain became very angry and looked dejected.
6And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
6The LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? Why do you look so discouraged?'
7If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee shall be its desire; but do thou rule over it.
7'If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door. It wants to control you, but you must master it.'
8And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
8Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let's go out to the field.' While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?
9Then the LORD asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' Cain answered, 'I don't know. Am I supposed to be my brother's guardian?'
10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
10The LORD said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.'
11And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
11'Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.'
12when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.
12'When you work the ground, it will no longer produce good crops for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.'
13And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
13Cain said to the LORD, 'My punishment is more than I can stand.'
14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.
14'Today you are driving me off the land, and I will be hidden from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'
15And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
15The LORD said to him, 'No, if anyone kills Cain, he will be punished seven times over.' Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
16And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
16So Cain left the LORD’S presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
17Cain had sexual relations with his wife. She became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was building a city at the time, and he named it Enoch, after his son.
18And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael; and Mehujael begat Methushael; and Methushael begat Lamech.
18Enoch was the father of Irad. Irad was the father of Mehujael. Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
19Lamech married two women. One was named Adah and the other was named Zillah.
20And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.
20Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the first of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
21And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.
21His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the first of all those who play the harp and the flute.
22And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
22Zillah also had a son named Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah.
23And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me:
23Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, listen to me. Wives of Lamech, hear what I say. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for hitting me.'
24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
24'If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.'
25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.
25Adam had sexual relations with his wife again. She gave birth to a son and named him Seth. She said, 'God has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.'
