1And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Here am I.

1Later on, God tested Abraham and called out to him, 'Abraham!' and he answered, 'Here I am.'

2And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

2God said, 'Take your son Isaac, your only son, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will show you.'

3And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

3Abraham got up early the next morning and saddled his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. After he had chopped the wood for the offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.

4On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

4On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

5And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come again to you.

5Abraham said to his servants, 'Stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go over there. We will worship, and then we will come back to you.'

6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife; and they went both of them together.

6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac's shoulders. He himself carried the fire and the knife. The two of them walked on together.

7And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold, the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?

7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, 'My father?' 'Yes, my son?' Abraham replied. Isaac said, 'We have the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?'

8And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son: so they went both of them together.

8Abraham answered, 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.' So the two of them continued walking together.

9And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

9When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

10And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.

11And the angel of Jehovah called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

11But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, 'Abraham! Abraham!' And he answered, 'Here I am.'

12And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me.

12The angel said, 'Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not held back your son, your only son, from me.'

13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son.

13Abraham looked up and saw a ram behind him, caught by its horns in a thick bush. He went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of Jehovah it shall be provided.

14Abraham named that place 'The LORD Will Provide.' And even today people say, 'On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.'

15And the angel of Jehovah called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven,

15The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,

16and said, By myself have I sworn, saith Jehovah, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son,

16and said, 'I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not held back your son, your only son,

17that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is upon the sea-shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

17I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies.

18and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

18Through your offspring, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my command.'

19So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they all traveled together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived in Beersheba.

20And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she also hath borne children unto thy brother Nahor:

20Sometime later, Abraham was told, 'Milcah has also given birth to children for your brother Nahor:

21Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,

21Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

22and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.'

23And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah gave birth to these eight sons for Nahor, Abraham's brother.

24And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bare Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.

24Nahor also had a concubine named Reumah, and she gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
