1For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.
1Christ has set us free so that we can enjoy true freedom. So stand strong and do not let yourselves be tied up again by a system of slavery.
2Behold, I Paul say unto you, that, if ye receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.
2Listen to me, Paul: I tell you that if you depend on circumcision, Christ will be of no use to you at all.
3Yea, I testify again to every man that receiveth circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
3I will say it again to every man: if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, you are obligated to obey every single requirement of the law.
4Ye are severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace.
4If you are trying to be made right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ; you have fallen away from God’s grace.
5For we through the Spirit by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.
5But we, through the power of the Holy Spirit, wait eagerly by faith for the righteousness we hope for.
6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love.
6When we are in Christ Jesus, it doesn't matter if we are circumcised or not. The only thing that matters is faith that expresses itself through love.
7Ye were running well; who hindered you that ye should not obey the truth?
7You were doing so well in your race! Who got in your way and kept you from following the truth?
8This persuasion came not of him that calleth you.
8That kind of influence does not come from the God who calls you.
9A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
9Just a little bit of yeast works its way through the whole batch of dough.
10I have confidence to you-ward in the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
10I am confident in the Lord that you will not accept any other view. But the person who is confusing you will be punished, no matter who he is.
11But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? then hath the stumbling-block of the cross been done away.
11Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching that circumcision is necessary, why am I still being persecuted? If that were true, the cross would no longer be offensive to anyone.
12I would that they that unsettle you would even go beyond circumcision.
12I wish those people who are upsetting you would go all the way and castrate themselves!
13For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another.
13You were called to be free, my brothers and sisters. But do not use your freedom as an excuse to do whatever your sinful nature wants. Instead, use your love to serve each other.
14For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
14The entire law is summed up in this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
15But if you keep biting and devouring each other, watch out, or you will destroy one another.
16But I say, Walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
16So I say, let the Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.
17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary the one to the other; that ye may not do the things that ye would.
17The sinful nature wants to do the opposite of what the Spirit wants, and the Spirit wants to do the opposite of what the sinful nature wants. These two are constantly fighting each other, so you cannot do whatever you please.
18But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
18But when you are led by the Spirit, you are no longer under the requirements of the law.
19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
19When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, and lustful pleasure,
20idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,
20worshiping false gods, witchcraft, hatred, fighting, jealousy, anger, selfish ambition, arguments, divisions, and following separate groups,
21envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
21envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other things like these. I am warning you now, just as I did before, that anyone living this way will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
22But the fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.
23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things.
24And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof.
24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.
