What Galatians 2:19 means
Paul says that through the law he died to the law, so that he might live to God. The Law, by revealing sin and demanding perfection, leads to the recognition of death under its curse. In Christ’s death, that sentence is carried out, and the believer, united with Him, is released from the Law as a covenant of works. The goal is not lawlessness but true life unto God, now animated by grace rather than driven by fear. Death to the law’s condemning power is the doorway to a new obedience springing from gratitude and the Spirit’s work.

Context
After warning against rebuilding the Law as a basis for righteousness, Paul explains the decisive break: the believer has died to the Law’s jurisdiction in Christ. This opens to the profound confession of verse 20 about being crucified with Christ and living by faith in the Son of God. Verse 21 will then draw the unavoidable implication: to seek righteousness through the Law would nullify grace and render Christ’s death pointless.
v.18For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.
v.19This passage
v.20I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I that live, but Christ liveth in me: and that life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith which is in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
