What Ezra 9:11 means

Ezra cites God’s command, given through His servants the prophets, that the land they entered was defiled by the abominations of its inhabitants. The point is spiritual and moral: the people of the land practiced things that polluted it before God. Israel was to regard the land as holy unto Jehovah and to purge themselves from influences that would draw them into idolatry and immorality. By recalling this, Ezra shows that the intermarriage issue is not cultural snobbery but obedience to revealed will. The prophets consistently called Israel to separation from the practices that had provoked God’s judgment on the land’s former inhabitants.

Context

Verse 11 spells out the authority behind Ezra’s concern: God’s word via the prophets. This clarifies that the current compromise contradicts longstanding revelation. It prepares for verse 12, which states the specific prohibitions and their purpose. The argument builds: God warned about the land’s moral uncleanness; therefore His people must not bind themselves in ways that would normalize or adopt such practices. The prayer tightens from principle to practical command.

v.10And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

v.11This passage

v.12now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
