What Ezra 10:22 means

From the sons of Pashhur, six are listed: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah. This completes the roster of priests implicated. The number and variety underline that leadership failure was not marginal. Yet by recording them within a process of repentance, the text also shows that restoration is possible when sin is faced and corrected. The community’s willingness to name respected families and require change protects the integrity of worship and teaching. Purity in the priesthood is vital because priests represent the people before God; if they blur covenant boundaries, the whole community is endangered.

Context

With this verse, the section naming priests concludes. The narrative will now move to Levites and other temple servants, showing that the cleansing reaches every layer of religious service. After the temple personnel are accounted for, the list will broaden to include many lay families throughout Israel. The transition maintains the theme: reform must begin in the house of God and then extend outward to all who bear His name.
