2And thou, son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? then cause her to know all her abominations.
2He said, 'Human one, are you ready to judge? Are you ready to judge this murderous city? Then make sure she understands all the disgusting things she has done.
3And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: A city that sheddeth blood in the midst of her, that her time may come, and that maketh idols against herself to defile her!
3Say to her: This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You are a city that sheds blood within your own walls, bringing on your own time of judgment, and you make idols that make you unclean.
4Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed, and art defiled in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the nations, and a mocking to all the countries.
4You are guilty because of the blood you have spilled and you are defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your final days near and reached the end of your years. Therefore, I have made you a disgrace to the nations and something for all countries to mock.
5Those that are near, and those that are far from thee, shall mock thee, thou infamous one and full of tumult.
5Both those near and far will mock you because of your bad reputation and the chaos within you.
6Behold, the princes of Israel, every one according to his power, have been in thee to shed blood.
6Look at the leaders of Israel who live in you; every one of them has used his power to spill blood.
7In thee have they set light by father and mother; in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the sojourner; in thee have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.
7In you, people treat their fathers and mothers with contempt. In you, they extort immigrants. In you, they mistreat orphans and widows.
8Thou hast despised my holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths.
8You have despised my holy things and treated my Sabbaths like they were nothing special.
9Slanderous men have been in thee to shed blood; and in thee they have eaten upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they have committed lewdness.
9There are people in you who tell lies to get others killed. In you, people eat at mountain shrines to idols and commit shameful acts.
10In thee have they uncovered their fathers’ nakedness; in thee have they humbled her that was unclean in her impurity.
10In you, men sleep with their fathers' wives. In you, they force themselves on women during their menstrual periods when they are ceremonially unclean.
11And one hath committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.
11In you, one man commits a disgusting sin with his neighbor’s wife, another filthily defiles his daughter-in-law, and another rapes his own sister, his father’s daughter.
12In thee have they taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken interest and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by oppression, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord Jehovah.
12In you, people take bribes to murder. You take interest and make a profit on loans to your own people. You have become rich by extorting your neighbors, and you have forgotten me, says the Sovereign LORD.
13Behold, therefore, I have smitten my hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.
13Look, I will strike my hands together in anger at the dishonest money you have made and at the blood you have shed.
14Can thy heart endure, or can thy hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I, Jehovah, have spoken it, and will do it.
14Will your courage hold up, or will your hands stay strong, when the time comes for me to deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it.
15And I will scatter thee among the nations, and disperse thee through the countries; and I will consume thy filthiness out of thee.
15I will scatter you among the nations and spread you through other countries. I will burn away your uncleanness.
16And thou shalt be profaned in thyself, in the sight of the nations; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah.
16When you are disgraced in the eyes of the nations, you will realize that I am the LORD.
18Son of man, the house of Israel is become dross unto me: all of them are brass and tin and iron and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are the dross of silver.
18Human one, the people of Israel have become like worthless waste to me. They are all just copper, tin, iron, and lead left in a furnace; they are nothing but the waste left over from silver.
19Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because ye are all become dross, therefore, behold, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.
19Therefore, the Sovereign LORD says: Because you have all become worthless waste, I will gather you together into the middle of Jerusalem.
20As they gather silver and brass and iron and lead and tin into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my wrath, and I will lay you there, and melt you.
20Just as silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted by a roaring fire, I will gather you in my hot anger and leave you there to melt.
21Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof.
21Yes, I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you will be melted inside the city.
22As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I, Jehovah, have poured out my wrath upon you.
22Just as silver melts in a furnace, you will melt in the city. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my anger on you.
24Son of man, say unto her, Thou art a land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.
24Human one, say to the land: You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of my anger.
25There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey: they have devoured souls; they take treasure and precious things; they have made her widows many in the midst thereof.
25There is a conspiracy among her prophets. Like a roaring lion tearing its prey, they devour people, take treasures and precious things, and make many women widows.
26Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things: they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
26Her priests have done violence to my law and treated my holy things as common. They don't teach the difference between what is holy and what is ordinary, or between what is clean and what is unclean. They ignore my Sabbaths, so that I am dishonored among them.
27Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain.
27Her officials are like wolves tearing their prey; they spill blood and kill people just to make money dishonestly.
28And her prophets have daubed for them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, when Jehovah hath not spoken.
28Her prophets cover up these sins like people whitewashing a wall with bad mortar. They see false visions and tell lies about the future. They say, 'The Sovereign LORD says this,' when the LORD has not spoken at all.
29The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery; yea, they have vexed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the sojourner wrongfully.
29The common people practice extortion and commit robbery. They mistreat the poor and needy and wrongly oppress the immigrant, denying them justice.
30And I sought for a man among them, that should build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none.
30I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall or stand in the gap before me on behalf of the land so I wouldn't have to destroy it, but I found no one.
31Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I brought upon their heads, saith the Lord Jehovah.
31So I will pour out my heavy anger on them and consume them with the fire of my wrath. I will bring down on their own heads exactly what they have done, says the Sovereign LORD.
