Exodus 19

1In the third month after the children of Israel went out from Egypt, on the same day, they came into the waste land of Sinai.

1In the third month of the going out of the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt, in this day they have come into the wilderness of Sinai,

1In the third month of the departure of Israel out of the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the wilderness of Sinai:

2And when they had gone away from Rephidim and had come into the waste land of Sinai, they put up their tents in the waste land before the mountain: there Israel put up its tents.

2and they journey from Rephidim, and enter the wilderness of Sinai, and encamp in the wilderness; and Israel encampeth there before the mount.

2For departing out of Raphidim, and coming to the desert of Sinai, they camped in the same place, and there Israel pitched their tents over against the mountain.

3And Moses went up to God, and the voice of the Lord came to him from the mountain, saying, Say to the family of Jacob, and give word to the children of Israel:

3And Moses hath gone up unto God, and Jehovah calleth unto him out of the mount, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the house of Jacob, and declare to the sons of Israel,

3And Moses went up to God; and the Lord called unto him from the mountain, and said: Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

4You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I took you, as on eagles' wings, guiding you to myself.

4Ye--ye have seen that which I have done to the Egyptians, and I bear you on eagles' wings, and bring you in unto Myself.

4You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, how I have carried you upon the wings of eagles, and have taken you to myself.

5If now you will truly give ear to my voice and keep my agreement, you will be my special property out of all the peoples: for all the earth is mine:

5`And now, if ye really hearken to My voice, then ye have kept My covenant, and been to Me a peculiar treasure more than all the peoples, for all the earth <FI>is<Fi> Mine;

5If therefore you will hear my voice, and keep my covenant, you shall be my peculiar possession above all people: for all the earth is mine.

6And you will be a kingdom of priests to me, and a holy nation. These are the words which you are to say to the children of Israel.

6and ye--ye are to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation: these <FI>are<Fi> the words which thou dost speak unto the sons of Israel.'

6And you shall be to me a priestly kingdom, and a holy nation. These are the words thou shalt speak to the children of Israel.

7And Moses came and sent for the chiefs of the people and put before them all these words which the Lord had given him orders to say.

7And Moses cometh, and calleth for the elders of the people, and setteth before them all these words which Jehovah hath commanded him;

7Moses came; and calling together the elders of the people, he declared all the words which the Lord had commanded.

8And all the people, answering together, said, Whatever the Lord has said we will do. And Moses took back to the Lord the words of the people.

8and all the people answer together and say, `All that Jehovah hath spoken we do;' and Moses returneth the words of the people unto Jehovah.

8And all the people answered together: All that the Lord hath spoken, we will do. And when Moses had related the people's words to the Lord,

9And the Lord said to Moses, See, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that what I say to you may come to the ears of the people and they may have belief in you for ever. And Moses gave the Lord word of what the people had said.

9And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Lo, I am coming unto thee in the thickness of the cloud, so that the people hear in My speaking with thee, and also believe in thee to the age;' and Moses declareth the words of the people unto Jehovah.

9The Lord said to him: Lo, now will I come to thee in the darkness of a cloud, that the people may hear me speaking to thee, and may believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10And the Lord said to Moses, Go to the people and make them holy today and tomorrow, and let their clothing be washed.

10And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Go unto the people; and thou hast sanctified them to-day and to-morrow, and they have washed their garments,

10And he said to him: Go to the people, and sanctify them to day, and to morrow, and let them wash their garments.

11And by the third day let them be ready: for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai, before the eyes of all the people.

11and have been prepared for the third day; for on the third day doth Jehovah come down before the eyes of all the people, on mount Sinai.

11And let them be ready against the third day; for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people, upon Mount Sinai.

12And let limits be marked out for the people round the mountain, and say to them, Take care not to go up the mountain or near the sides of it: whoever puts his foot on the mountain will certainly come to his death:

12`And thou hast made a border <FI>for<Fi> the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, going up into the mount, or coming against its extremity; whoever is coming against the mount is certainly put to death;

12And thou shalt appoint certain limits to the people round about, and thou shalt say to them: Take heed ye go not up into the mount, and that ye touch not the borders thereof: every one that toucheth the mount, dying he shall die.

13He is not to be touched by a hand, but is to be stoned or have an arrow put through him; man or beast, he is to be put to death: at the long sounding of a horn they may come up to the mountain.

13a hand cometh not against him, for he is certainly stoned or shot through, whether beast or man it liveth not; in the drawing out of the jubilee cornet they go up into the mount.'

13No hands shall touch him, but he shall be stoned to death, or he shall be shot through with arrows: whether it be beast, or man, he shall not live. When the trumpet shall begin to sound, then let them go up into the mount.

14Then Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and made the people holy; and their clothing was washed.

14And Moses cometh down from the mount unto the people, and sanctifieth the people, and they wash their garments;

14And Moses came down from the mount to the people, and sanctified them. And when they had washed their garments,

15And he said to the people, Be ready by the third day: do not come near a woman.

15and he saith unto the people, `Be ye prepared for the third day, come not nigh unto a woman.'

15He said to them: Be ready against the third day, and come not near your wives.

16And when morning came on the third day, there were thunders and flames and a thick cloud on the mountain, and a horn sounding very loud; and all the people in the tents were shaking with fear.

16And it cometh to pass, on the third day, while it is morning, that there are voices, and lightnings, and a heavy cloud, on the mount, and the sound of a trumpet very strong; and all the people who <FI>are<Fi> in the camp do tremble.

16And now the third day was come, and the morning appeared: and behold thunders began to be heard, and lightning to flash, and a very thick cloud to cover the mount, and the noise of the trumpet sounded exceeding loud; and the people that was in the camp, feared.

17And Moses made the people come out of their tents and take their places before God; and they came to the foot of the mountain,

17And Moses bringeth out the people to meet God from the camp, and they station themselves at the lower part of the mount,

17And when Moses had brought them forth to meet God, from the place of the camp, they stood at the bottom of the mount.

18And all the mountain of Sinai was smoking, for the Lord had come down on it in fire: and the smoke of it went up like the smoke of a great burning; and all the mountain was shaking.

18and mount Sinai <FI>is<Fi> wholly a smoke from the presence of Jehovah, who hath come down on it in fire, and its smoke goeth up as smoke of the furnace, and the whole mount trembleth exceedingly;

18And all Mount Sinai was on a smoke: because the Lord was come down upon it in fire, and the smoke arose from it as out of a furnace: and all the mount was terrible.

19And when the sound of the horn became louder and louder, Moses' words were answered by the voice of God.

19and the sound of the trumpet is going on, and very strong; Moses speaketh, and God doth answer him with a voice.

19And the sound of the trumpet grew by degrees louder and louder, and was drawn out to a greater length: Moses spoke, and God answered him.

20Then the Lord came down on to Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain, and the Lord sent for Moses to come up to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

20And Jehovah cometh down on mount Sinai, unto the top of the mount, and Jehovah calleth for Moses unto the top of the mount, and Moses goeth up.

20And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, in the very top of the mount, and he called Moses unto the top thereof. And when he was gone up thither,

21And the Lord said to Moses, Go down and give the people orders to keep back, for fear that a great number of them, forcing their way through to see the Lord, may come to destruction.

21And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Go down, protest to the people, lest they break through unto Jehovah to see, and many of them have fallen;

21He said unto him: Go down, and charge the people; lest they should have a mind to pass the limits to see the Lord, and a very great multitude of them should perish.

22And let the priests who come near to the Lord make themselves holy, for fear that the Lord may come on them suddenly.

22and also the priests who are coming nigh unto Jehovah do sanctify themselves, lest Jehovah break forth on them.'

22The priests also that come to the Lord, let them be sanctified, lest he strike them.

23And Moses said to the Lord, The people will not be able to come up the mountain, for you gave us orders to put limits round the mountain, marking it out and making it holy.

23And Moses saith unto Jehovah, `The people <FI>is<Fi> unable to come up unto mount Sinai, for Thou--Thou hast protested to us, saying, Make a border <FI>for<Fi> the mount, then thou hast sanctified it.'

23And Moses said to the Lord: The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai: for thou didst charge, and command, saying: Set limits about the mount, and sanctify it.

24And the Lord said to him, Go down, and you and Aaron may come up; but let not the priests and the people make their way through to the Lord, or he will come on them suddenly.

24And Jehovah saith unto him, `Go, descend, then thou hast come up, thou, and Aaron with thee; and the priests and the people do not break through, to come up unto Jehovah, lest He break forth upon them.'

24And the Lord said to him: Go, get thee down; and thou shalt come up, thou and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people pass the limits, nor come up to the Lord, lest he kill them.

25So Moses went down to the people and said this to them.

25And Moses goeth down unto the people, and saith unto them: --

25And Moses went down to the people and told them all.
