1Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):
1And these <FI>are<Fi> the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;
1These are the names of the children of Israel, that went into Egypt with Jacob: they went in every man with his household:
1Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came into Egypt; every man and his family came with Jacob.
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
2Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
3Issachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
4Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
4Dan, and Nephthali, Gad and Aser.
4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already.
5And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.
5And all the souls that came out of Jacob's thigh, were seventy: but Joseph was in Egypt.
5All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons: and Joseph had come to Egypt before them.
6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
6And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;
6After he was dead, and all his brethren, and all that generation,
6Then Joseph came to his end, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
7And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
7and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.
7The children of Israel increased, and sprung up into multitudes, and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land.
7And the children of Israel were fertile, increasing very greatly in numbers and in power; and the land was full of them.
8Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
8And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,
8In the mean time there arose a new king over Egypt, that knew not Joseph:
8Now a new king came to power in Egypt, who had no knowledge of Joseph.
9And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
9and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel <FI>is<Fi> more numerous and mighty than we;
9And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.
9And he said to his people, See, the people of Israel are greater in number and in power than we are:
10come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.
10give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'
10Come let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply: and if any war shall rise against us, join with our enemies, and having overcome us, depart out of the land.
10Let us take care for fear that their numbers may become even greater, and if there is a war, they may be joined with those who are against us, and make an attack on us, and go up out of the land.
11Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses.
11And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;
11Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens: and they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom, and Ramesses.
11So they put overseers of forced work over them, in order to make their strength less by the weight of their work. And they made store-towns for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
12and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;
12But the more they oppressed them, the more they were multiplied and increased.
12But the more cruel they were to them, the more their number increased, till all the land was full of them. And the children of Israel were hated by the Egyptians.
13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor:
13and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,
13And the Egyptians hated the children of Israel, and afflicted them and mocked them:
13And they gave the children of Israel even harder work to do:
14and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field, all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor.
14and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every <FI>kind<Fi> of service in the field; all their service in which they have served <FI>is<Fi> with rigour.
14And they made their life bitter with hard works in clay and brick, and with all manner of service, wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth.
14And made their lives bitter with hard work, making building-material and bricks, and doing all sorts of work in the fields under the hardest conditions.
15And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
15And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one <FI>is<Fi> Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),
15And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews: of whom one was called Sephora, the other Phua,
15And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew women who gave help at the time of childbirth (the name of the one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah),
16and he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth-stool; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
16and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it <FI>is<Fi> a son--then ye have put him to death; and if it <FI>is<Fi> a daughter--then she hath lived.'
16Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive.
16When you are looking after the Hebrew women in childbirth, if it is a son you are to put him to death; but if it is a daughter, she may go on living.
17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.
17And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;
17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded, but saved the men children.
17But the women had the fear of God, and did not do as the king of Egypt said, but let the male children go on living.
18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?
18and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'
18And the king called for them and said: What is it that you meant to do, that you would save the men children?
18And the king of Egypt sent for the women, and said to them, Why have you done this, and let the male children go on living?
19And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.
19And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women <FI>are<Fi> not as the Egyptian women, for they <FI>are<Fi> lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them--they have borne!'
19They answered: The Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they themselves are skilful in the office of a midwife; and they are delivered before we come to them.
19And they said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are strong, and the birth takes place before we come to them.
20And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
20And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;
20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong.
20And the blessing of God was on these women: and the people were increased in number and became very strong.
21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households.
21and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;
21And because the midwives feared God, he built them houses.
21And because the women who took care of the Hebrew mothers had the fear of God, he gave them families.
22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
22and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born--into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
22Pharao therefore charged all his people, saying: Whatsoever shall be born of the male sex, ye shall cast into the river: whatsoever of the female, ye shall save alive.
22And Pharaoh gave orders to all his people, saying, Every son who comes to birth is to be put into the river, but every daughter may go on living.
