What Esther 6:4 means

The king seeks immediate counsel—“Who is in the court?”—revealing his impulse to act at once. Providence arranges that Haman is already in the outer court, arriving early to request permission to hang Mordecai on the gallows he built. The juxtaposition is striking: the king wants to honor the man Haman wants to kill. Haman’s eagerness displays his hardened malice; he can scarcely wait for morning to end before securing Mordecai’s death. Yet his timing will undo him. The verse captures the collision of intentions: a sovereign intent on rewarding loyalty and a courtier bent on vengeance, both converging at the same doorway.

Context

Up to now, the king has remembered an unrequited service and decided to correct it. He now looks for a counselor, and Haman steps forward, uninvited by name but conveniently present. The reader is prepared for irony: the one plotting Mordecai’s death will be tasked in the opposite direction. The next verses will reveal the king’s question and Haman’s self-serving assumption, which together craft the perfect reversal.

v.3And the king said, What honor and dignity hath been bestowed on Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

v.4This passage

v.5And the king’s servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.
