1If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.
1Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, focus your attention on the things of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at the right hand of God.
2Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.
2Think about the things of heaven, not the things of this earth.
3For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
3For your old life died, and your new life is hidden with Christ in God.
4When Christ, who is our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also with him be manifested in glory.
4When Christ, who is your real life, is revealed to the whole world, you will also be revealed with him in glory.
5Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry;
5Therefore, put to death the earthly things lurking within you: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is a form of worshiping idols.
6for which things’ sake cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience:
6The wrath of God is coming because of these things on those who are disobedient.
7wherein ye also once walked, when ye lived in these things;
7You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world.
8but now do ye also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, railing, shameful speaking out of your mouth:
8But now you must get rid of all these things: anger, rage, malicious behavior, insults, and dirty language from your mouth.
9lie not one to another; seeing that ye have put off the old man with his doings,
9Do not lie to each other, since you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
10and have put on the new man, that is being renewed unto knowledge after the image of him that created him:
10Put on your new nature, which is being made new as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
11where there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondman, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.
11In this new life, it doesn't matter if you are a Greek or a Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, uncivilized, a Scythian, a slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.
12Put on therefore, as God’s elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering;
12Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, clothe yourselves with tender mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
13forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye:
13Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
14and above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.
14Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to the which also ye were called in one body; and be ye thankful.
15Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.
16Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
17And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
17And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
18Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord.
19Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
19Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.
20Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing in the Lord.
20Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord.
21Fathers, provoke not your children, that they be not discouraged.
21Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.
22Servants, obey in all things them that are your masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord:
22Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord.
23whatsoever ye do, work heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men;
23Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
