Acts 24

1And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with certain elders, andwithan orator, one Tertullus; and they informed the governor against Paul.

1And after five days came down the chief priest Ananias, with the elders, and a certain orator--Tertullus, and they made manifest to the governor <FI>the things<Fi> against Paul;

1And after five days, the high priest, Ananias, came with certain of the rulers, and an expert talker, one Tertullus; and they made a statement to Felix against Paul.

2And when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy much peace, and that by thy providence evils are corrected for this nation,

2and he having been called, Tertullus began to accuse <FI>him<Fi> , saying, `Much peace enjoying through thee, and worthy deeds being done to this nation through thy forethought,

2And when he had been sent for, Tertullus, starting his statement, said, Because by you we are living in peace, and through your wisdom wrongs are put right for this nation,

3we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.

3always, also, and everywhere we receive it, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness;

3In all things and in all places we are conscious of our great debt to you, most noble Felix.

4But, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I entreat thee to hear us of thy clemency a few words.

4and that I may not be further tedious to thee, I pray thee to hear us concisely in thy gentleness;

4But, so that I may not make you tired, I make a request to you of your mercy, to give hearing to a short statement.

5For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

5for having found this man a pestilence, and moving a dissension to all the Jews through the world--a ringleader also of the sect of the Nazarenes--

5For this man, in our opinion, is a cause of trouble, a maker of attacks on the government among Jews through all the empire, and a chief mover in the society of the Nazarenes:

6who moreover assayed to profane the temple: on whom also we laid hold:

6who also the temple did try to profane, whom also we took, and according to our law did wish to judge,

6Who, in addition, was attempting to make the Temple unclean: whom we took,

7and Lysias the chief captain having come near, with much violence, out of our hands did take away,

8from whom thou wilt be able, by examining him thyself, to take knowledge of all these things whereof we accuse him.

8having commanded his accusers to come to thee, from whom thou mayest be able, thyself having examined, to know concerning all these things of which we accuse him;'

8And from whom you will be able, by questioning him yourself, to get knowledge of all the things which we say against him.

9And the Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that these things were so.

9and the Jews also agreed, professing these things to be so.

9And the Jews were in agreement with his statement, saying that these things were so.

10And when the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, Paul answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I cheerfully make my defence:

10And Paul answered--the governor having beckoned to him to speak--`Knowing <FI>that<Fi> for many years thou hast been a judge to this nation, the more cheerfully the things concerning myself I do answer;

10Then when the ruler had given him a sign to make his answer, Paul said, Because I have knowledge that you have been a judge over this nation for a number of years, I am glad to make my answer:

11seeing that thou canst take knowledge that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem:

11thou being able to know that it is not more than twelve days to me since I went up to worship in Jerusalem,

11Seeing that you are able to make certain of the fact that it is not more than twelve days from the time when I came up to Jerusalem for worship;

12and neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city.

12and neither in the temple did they find me reasoning with any one, or making a dissension of the multitude, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city;

12And they have not seen me in argument with any man in the Temple, or working up the feelings of the people, in the Synagogues or in the town:

13Neither can they prove to thee the things whereof they now accuse me.

13nor are they able to prove against me the things concerning which they now accuse me.

13And they are not able to give facts in support of the things which they say against me now.

14But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;

14`And I confess this to thee, that, according to the way that they call a sect, so serve I the God of the fathers, believing all things that in the law and the prophets have been written,

14But this I will say openly to you, that I do give worship to the God of our fathers after that Way, which to them is not the true religion: but I have belief in all the things which are in the law and in the books of the prophets:

15having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust.

15having hope toward God, which they themselves also wait for, <FI>that<Fi> there is about to be a rising again of the dead, both of righteous and unrighteous;

15Hoping in God for that which they themselves are looking for, that there will be a coming back from the dead for upright men and wrongdoers.

16Herein I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence toward God and men always.

17Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings:

17`And after many years I came, about to do kind acts to my nation, and offerings,

18amidst which they found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult: but there were certain Jews from Asia—

18in which certain Jews from Asia did find me purified in the temple, not with multitude, nor with tumult,

18And having been made clean, I was in the Temple, but not with a great number of people, and not with noise: but there were certain Jews from Asia,

19who ought to have been here before thee, and to make accusation, if they had aught against me.

19whom it behoveth to be present before thee, and to accuse, if they had anything against me,

19And it would have been better if they had come here to make a statement, if they have anything against me.

20Or else let these men themselves say what wrong-doing they found when I stood before the council,

20or let these same say if they found any unrighteousness in me in my standing before the sanhedrim,

20Or let these men here present say what wrongdoing was seen in me when I was before the Sanhedrin,

21except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question before you this day.

21except concerning this one voice, in which I cried, standing among them--Concerning a rising again of the dead I am judged to-day by you.'

21But only this one thing which I said among them in a loud voice, I am this day being judged on the question of the coming back from the dead.

22But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will determine your matter.

22And having heard these things, Felix delayed them--having known more exactly of the things concerning the way--saying, `When Lysias the chief captain may come down, I will know fully the things concerning you;'

22But Felix, who had a more detailed knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, When Lysias, the chief captain, comes down, I will give attention to your business.

23And he gave order to the centurion that he should be kept in charge, and should have indulgence; and not to forbid any of his friends to minister unto him.

23having given also a direction to the centurion to keep Paul, to let <FI>him<Fi> also have liberty, and to forbid none of his own friends to minister or to come near to him.

23And he gave orders to the captain to keep Paul under his control, and to let him have everything he had need of; and not to keep his friends from coming to see him.

24But after certain days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus.

24And after certain days, Felix having come with Drusilla his wife, being a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith toward Christ,

24But after some days, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, who was of the Jews by birth, and sent for Paul, and gave hearing to him about faith in Christ Jesus.

25And as he reasoned of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, Go thy way for this time; and when I have a convenient season, I will call thee unto me.

25and he reasoning concerning righteousness, and temperance, and the judgment that is about to be, Felix, having become afraid, answered, `For the present be going, and having got time, I will call for thee;'

25And while he was talking about righteousness and self-control and the judging which was to come, Felix had great fear and said, Go away for the present, and when the right time comes I will send for you.

26He hoped withal that money would be given him of Paul: wherefore also he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

26and at the same time also hoping that money shall be given to him by Paul, that he may release him, therefore, also sending for him the oftener, he was conversing with him;

26For he was hoping that Paul would give him money: so he sent for him more frequently and had talk with him.

27But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.

27and two years having been fulfilled, Felix received a successor, Porcius Festus; Felix also willing to lay a favour on the Jews, left Paul bound.

27But after two years Porcius Festus took the place of Felix, who, desiring to have the approval of the Jews, kept Paul in chains.
