Acts 21

1And it came to pass, at our sailing, having been parted from them, having run direct, we came to Coos, and the succeeding <FI>day<Fi> to Rhodes, and thence to Patara,

1And when it came to pass that, being parted from them, we set sail, we came with a straight course to Coos, and the day following to Rhodes: and from thence to Patara.

2and having found a ship passing over to Phenicia, having gone on board, we sailed,

2And when we had found a ship sailing over to Phenice, we went aboard and set forth.

3and having discovered Cyprus, and having left it on the left, we were sailing to Syria, and did land at Tyre, for there was the ship discharging the lading.

3And when we had discovered Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed into Syria, and came to Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

4And having found out the disciples, we tarried there seven days, and they said to Paul, through the Spirit, not to go up to Jerusalem;

4And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul, through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

5but when it came that we completed the days, having gone forth, we went on, all bringing us on the way, with women and children, unto the outside of the city, and having bowed the knees upon the shore, we prayed,

5And the days being expired, departing we went forward, they all bringing us on our way, with their wives and children, till we were out of the city. And we kneeled down on the shore: and we prayed.

6and having embraced one another, we embarked in the ship, and they returned to their own friends.

6And when we had bid one another farewell, we took ship. And they returned home.

7And we, having finished the course, from Tyre came down to Ptolemais, and having saluted the brethren, we remained one day with them;

7But we, having finished the voyage by sea, from Tyre came down to Ptolemais: and saluting the brethren, we abode one day with them.

8and on the morrow Paul and his company having gone forth, we came to Caesarea, and having entered into the house of Philip the evangelist--who is of the seven--we remained with him,

8And the next day departing, we came to Caesarea. And entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we abode with him.

9and this one had four daughters, virgins, prophesying.

9And he had four daughters, virgins, who did prophesy.

10And we remaining many more days, there came down a certain one from Judea, a prophet, by name Agabus,

10And as we tarried there for some days, there came from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

11and he having come unto us, and having taken up the girdle of Paul, having bound also his own hands and feet, said, `Thus saith the Holy Spirit, The man whose is this girdle--so shall the Jews in Jerusalem bind, and they shall deliver <FI>him<Fi> up to the hands of nations.'

11Who, when he was come to us, took Paul's girdle: and binding his own feet and hands, he said: Thus saith the Holy Ghost: The man whose girdle this is, the Jews shall bind in this manner in Jerusalem and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

12And when we heard these things, we called upon <FI>him<Fi> --both we, and those of that place--not to go up to Jerusalem,

12Which when we had heard, both we and they that were of that place desired him that he would not go up to Jerusalem.

13and Paul answered, `What do ye--weeping, and crushing mine heart? for I, not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem, am ready, for the name of the Lord Jesus;'

13Then Paul answered and said: What do you mean, weeping and afflicting my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but to die also in Jerusalem, for the name of the Lord Jesus.

14and he not being persuaded, we were silent, saying, `The will of the Lord be done.'

14And when we could not persuade him, we ceased, saying: The will of the Lord be done.

15And after these days, having taken <FI>our<Fi> vessels, we were going up to Jerusalem,

15And after those days, being prepared, we went up to Jerusalem.

16and there went also of the disciples from Caesarea with us, bringing with them him with whom we may lodge, a certain Mnason of Cyprus, an aged disciple.

16And there went also with us some of the disciples from Caesarea, bringing with them one Mnason a Cyprian, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.

17And we having come to Jerusalem, the brethren did gladly receive us,

17And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.

18and on the morrow Paul was going in with us unto James, all the elders also came,

18And the day following, Paul went in with us unto James: and all the ancients were assembled.

19and having saluted them, he was declaring, one by one, each of the things God did among the nations through his ministration,

19Whom when he had saluted, he related particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.

20and they having heard, were glorifying the Lord. They said also to him, `Thou seest, brother, how many myriads there are of Jews who have believed, and all are zealous of the law,

20But they hearing it, glorified God and said to him: Thou seest, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews that have believed: and they are all zealous for the law.

21and they are instructed concerning thee, that apostasy from Moses thou dost teach to all Jews among the nations, saying--Not to circumcise the children, nor after the customs to walk;

21Now they have heard of thee that thou teachest those Jews, who are among the Gentiles to depart from Moses: saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, nor walk according to the custom.

22what then is it? certainly the multitude it behoveth to come together, for they will hear that thou hast come.

22What is it therefore? The multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.

23`This, therefore, do that we say to thee: We have four men having a vow on themselves,

23Do therefore this that we say to thee. We have four men, who have a vow on them.

24these having taken, be purified with them, and be at expence with them, that they may shave the head, and all may know that the things of which they have been instructed concerning thee are nothing, but thou dost walk--thyself also--the law keeping.

24Take these and sanctify thyself with them: and bestow on them, that they may shave their heads. And all will know that the things which they have heard of these are false: but that thou thyself also walkest keeping the law.

25`And concerning those of the nations who have believed, we have written, having given judgment, that they observe no such thing, except to keep themselves both from idol-sacrifices, and blood, and a strangled thing, and whoredom.'

25But, as touching the Gentiles that believe, we have written, decreeing that they should only refrain themselves from that which has been offered to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication.

26Then Paul, having taken the men, on the following day, with them having purified himself, was entering into the temple, announcing the fulfilment of the days of the purification, till the offering was offered for each one of them.

26Then Paul took the men and, the next day being purified with them, entered into the temple, giving notice of the accomplishment of the days of purification, until an oblation should be offered for every one of them.

27And, as the seven days were about to be fully ended, the Jews from Asia having beheld him in the temple, were stirring up all the multitude, and they laid hands upon him,

27But when the seven days were drawing to an end, those Jews that were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people and laid hands upon him, crying out:

28crying out, `Men, Israelites, help! this is the man who, against the people, and the law, and this place, all everywhere is teaching; and further, also, Greeks he brought into the temple, and hath defiled this holy place;'

28Men of Israel, help: This is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people and the law and this place; and moreover hath brought in Gentiles into the temple and hath violated this holy place.

29for they had seen before Trophimus, the Ephesian, in the city with him, whom they were supposing that Paul brought into the temple.

29(For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him. whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)

30All the city also was moved and there was a running together of the people, and having laid hold on Paul, they were drawing him out of the temple, and immediately were the doors shut,

30And he whole city was in an uproar: and the people ran together. And taking Paul, they drew him out of the temple: and immediately the doors were shut.

31and they seeking to kill him, a rumour came to the chief captain of the band that all Jerusalem hath been thrown into confusion,

31And as they went about to kill him, it was told the tribune of the band that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

32who, at once, having taken soldiers and centurions, ran down upon them, and they having seen the chief captain and the soldiers, did leave off beating Paul.

32Who, forthwith taking with him soldiers and centurions, ran down to them. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they left off beating Paul.

33Then the chief captain, having come nigh, took him, and commanded <FI>him<Fi> to be bound with two chains, and was inquiring who he may be, and what it is he hath been doing,

33Then the tribune, coming near, took him and commanded him to be bound with two chains: and demanded who he was and what he had done.

34and some were crying out one thing, and some another, among the multitude, and not being able to know the certainty because of the tumult, he commanded him to be carried to the castle,

34And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude. And when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle.

35and when he came upon the steps, it happened he was borne by the soldiers, because of the violence of the multitude,

35And when he was come to the stairs, it fell out that he was carried by the soldiers, because of the violence of the people.

36for the crowd of the people was following after, crying, `Away with him.'

36For the multitude of the people followed after, crying: Away with him!

37And Paul being about to be led into the castle, saith to the chief captain, `Is it permitted to me to say anything unto thee?' and he said, `Greek dost thou know?

37And as Paul was about to be brought into the castle, he saith to the tribune: May I speak something to thee? Who said: Canst thou speak Greek?

38art not thou, then, the Egyptian who before these days made an uprising, and did lead into the desert the four thousand men of the assassins?'

38Art not thou that Egyptian who before these days didst raise a tumult and didst lead forth into the desert four thousand men that were murderers?

39And Paul said, `I, indeed, am a man, a Jew, of Tarsus of Cilicia, of no mean city a citizen; and I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.'

39But Paul said to him: I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city. And I beseech thee, suffer me to speak to the people.

40And he having given him leave, Paul having stood upon the stairs, did beckon with the hand to the people, and there having been a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew dialect, saying:

40And when he had given him leave, Paul standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. And a great silence being made, he spoke unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying:
