What Acts 20:25 means

Paul soberly asserts that those among whom he preached the kingdom will not see his face again. This is a final farewell, not a temporary parting. The kingdom he preached remains, though the messenger departs. The statement invests the coming exhortations with urgent weight. It also shows Paul’s realism: he knows the cost of his path and prepares his friends to carry on without his physical presence. Their hope is not in Paul but in the King and His Word, which endure. Grief will come, but it will not undo the kingdom advance begun among them.

Context

After declaring his life’s aim, Paul now anticipates permanent separation from the Ephesian elders. This intensifies the seriousness of his ensuing claims (verses 26–27) and the charge to watch the flock (verses 28–31). The farewell tone will culminate in prayer and tears (verses 36–38). Placing this statement here underscores why Paul speaks so plainly and thoroughly: this may be his last chance to strengthen these leaders face-to-face before he journeys to Jerusalem.

v.24But I hold not my life of any account as dear unto myself, so that I may accomplish my course, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

v.25This passage

v.26Wherefore I testify unto you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
