Acts 19

1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:

2and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.

2he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive--having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

2he said to them, Did ye receive [the] Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they [said] to him, We did not even hear if [the] Holy Spirit was [come].

3And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.

3and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.'

3And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John.

4And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

4And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe--that is, in the Christ--Jesus;'

10And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

11And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.

12so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.

13But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

13And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon <FI>them<Fi> to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;'

13And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches.

14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.

15And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

15But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but ye, who are ye?

16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

16And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

17And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

20So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

21Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

21And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying--`After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

22And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

24For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;

24for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

24For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans;

25whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.

25whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

25whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work,

26And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:

26and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

26and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are nogods which are made with hands.

27and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

27and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

27Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the greatgoddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres.

28And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

28And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great <FI>is<Fi> the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

29And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.

29and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

30And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

30And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

31And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.

31and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre.

32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

32Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

32Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together.

33And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defence unto the people.

33and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander--the Jews thrusting him forward--and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

33But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people.

34But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

34and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great <FI>is<Fi> the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

34But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.

35And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

35And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

35And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven?

36Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

36these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

36These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong.

37For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.

38If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

38if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court <FI>days<Fi> are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

38If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who [are] with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

39But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.

39`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

40For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.

40for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

41And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
