1I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming and his kingdom:

1I chargetheein the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

1I do fully testify, then, before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is about to judge living and dead at his manifestation and his reign--

1I give you orders, before God and Christ Jesus, who will be the judge of the living and the dead, and by his revelation and his kingdom;

2Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine.

2preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

2preach the word; be earnest in season, out of season, convict, rebuke, exhort, in all long-suffering and teaching,

2Be preaching the word at all times, in every place; make protests, say sharp words, give comfort, with long waiting and teaching;

3For there shall be a time when they will not endure sound doctrine but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers having itching ears:

3For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;

3for there shall be a season when the sound teaching they will not suffer, but according to their own desires to themselves they shall heap up teachers--itching in the hearing,

3For the time will come when they will not take the true teaching; but, moved by their desires, they will get for themselves a great number of teachers for the pleasure of hearing them;

4And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables.

4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.

4and indeed, from the truth the hearing they shall turn away, and to the fables they shall be turned aside.

4And shutting their ears to what is true, will be turned away to belief in foolish stories.

5But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. Be sober.

5But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry.

5And thou--watch in all things; suffer evil; do the work of one proclaiming good news; of thy ministration make full assurance,

5But be self-controlled in all things, do without comfort, go on preaching the good news, completing the work which has been given you to do.

6For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand.

6For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure is come.

6for I am already being poured out, and the time of my release hath arrived;

6For I am even now being offered, and my end is near.

7I have fought a good fight: I have finished my course: I have kept the faith.

7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:

7the good strife I have striven, the course I have finished, the faith I have kept,

7I have made a good fight, I have come to the end of my journey, I have kept the faith:

8As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming. Make haste to come to me quickly.

8henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

8henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of the righteousness that the Lord--the Righteous Judge--shall give to me in that day, and not only to me, but also to all those loving his manifestation.

8From now on, the crown of righteousness is made ready for me, which the Lord, the upright judge, Will give to me at that day: and not only to me, but to all those who have had love for his revelation.

9For Demas hath left me, loving this world, and is gone to Thessalonica:

9Give diligence to come shortly unto me:

9Be diligent to come unto me quickly,

9Do your best to come to me before long:

10Crescens into Galatia, Titus into Dalmatia.

10for Demas forsook me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

10for Demas forsook me, having loved the present age, and went on to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia,

10For Demas has gone away from me, for love of this present life, and has gone to Thessalonica: Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

15Whom do thou also avoid: for he hath greatly withstood our words.

15of whom do thou also beware; for he greatly withstood our words.

15of whom also do thou beware, for greatly hath he stood against our words;

15But be on the watch for him, for he was violent in his attacks on our teaching.

16At my first answer, no man stood with me: but all forsook me. May it not be laid to their charge!

16At my first defence no one took my part, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their account.

16in my first defence no one stood with me, but all forsook me, (may it not be reckoned to them!)

17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that by me the preaching may be accomplished and that all the Gentiles may hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

17But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me; that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

17and the Lord stood by me, and did strengthen me, that through me the preaching might be fully assured, and all the nations might hear, and I was freed out of the mouth of a lion,

17But the Lord was by my side and gave me strength; so that through me the news might be given out in full measure, and all the Gentiles might give ear: and I was taken out of the mouth of the lion.
