What 2 Timothy 1:10 means
What God purposed before time is now revealed in history by the appearing of “our Saviour Christ Jesus.” Through His death and resurrection, Christ “abolished death” and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Death still exists in experience, but its rule is broken for those in Christ. The gospel announces and imparts eternal life, making clear what was once shadowed. Here the focus is unmistakably Christ-centered: He is the one who conquers death and unveils the hope believers possess. This truth strengthens courage; if death is defeated, shame and fear lose their grip. Suffering is reframed by the sure promise of resurrection life in Christ.

Context
This verse completes the theological foundation begun in verses 8–9. It explains how God’s eternal grace became visible in time—through Christ’s appearing and victory over death. It sets up verse 11, where Paul states his appointment to proclaim this gospel, and verse 12, where he expresses unashamed confidence amid suffering. The emphasis on life and immortality echoes verse 1’s “promise of the life,” tying the opening to the heart of the message. With Christ’s triumph proclaimed, Paul can now speak of his commission and the implications for Timothy’s steadfastness.
