1Now we beseech you, brethren, touching the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him;
1Now, brothers and sisters, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to meet him, we ask you:
2to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand;
2Do not be easily upset or worried by some spirit, or a message, or a letter supposedly from us, claiming that the day of the Lord has already arrived.
3let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition,
3Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. That day will not come until the great rebellion happens and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the one destined for destruction.
4he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God.
4He will oppose and exalt himself above everything that is called God or is worshiped. He will even sit in God’s temple, claiming that he himself is God.
5Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
5Don't you remember that I told you these things while I was still with you?
6And now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season.
6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
7For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way.
7For this secret power of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so until he is taken out of the way.
8And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming;
8Then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming.
9even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
9The coming of the lawless one will be the work of Satan, accompanied by all kinds of power, signs, and fake miracles.
10and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
10He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
11And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie:
11For this reason, God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie.
12that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
12Then all who did not believe the truth but took pleasure in evil will be judged.
13But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
13But we must always thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. From the beginning, God chose you to be saved through the Spirit’s work to make you holy and through your belief in the truth.
14whereunto he called you through our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
14He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by epistle of ours.
15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by what we said or by our letter.
