2 Peter 3

1This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance;

1My loved ones, this is now my second letter to you, and in this as in the first, I am attempting to keep your true minds awake;

1This, now, beloved, a second letter to you I write, in both which I stir up your pure mind in reminding <FI>you<Fi> ,

1Behold this second epistle I write to you, my dearly beloved, in which, I stir up by way of admonition your sincere mind:

2that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:

2So that you may keep in mind the words of the holy prophets in the past, and the law of the Lord and Saviour which was given to you by his Apostles.

2to be mindful of the sayings said before by the holy prophets, and of the command of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour,

2That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophet and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour.

3knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts,

3Having first of all the knowledge that in the last days there will be men who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things,

3this first knowing, that there shall come in the latter end of the days scoffers, according to their own desires going on,

3Knowing this first: That in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

4Saying, Where is the hope of his coming? From the death of the fathers till now everything has gone on as it was from the making of the world.

4and saying, `Where is the promise of his presence? for since the fathers did fall asleep, all things so remain from the beginning of the creation;'

4Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? For since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

5For this they wilfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God;

5But in taking this view they put out of their minds the memory that in the old days there was a heaven, and an earth lifted out of the water and circled by water, by the word of God;

5for this is unobserved by them willingly, that the heavens were of old, and the earth out of water and through water standing together by the word of God,

5For this they are wilfully ignorant of: That the heavens were before, and the earth out of water and through water, consisting by the word of God:

6by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

6And that the world which then was came to an end through the overflowing of the waters.

6through which the then world, by water having been deluged, was destroyed;

6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.

7but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

7But the present heaven and the present earth have been kept for destruction by fire, which is waiting for them on the day of the judging and destruction of evil men.

7and the present heavens and the earth, by the same word are treasured, for fire being kept to a day of judgment and destruction of the impious men.

7But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men.

8But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

8But, my loved ones, keep in mind this one thing, that with the Lord one day is the same as a thousand years, and a thousand years are no more than one day.

8And this one thing let not be unobserved by you, beloved, that one day with the Lord <FI>is<Fi> as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day;

8But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

9The Lord is not slow in keeping his word, as he seems to some, but he is waiting in mercy for you, not desiring the destruction of any, but that all may be turned from their evil ways.

9the Lord is not slow in regard to the promise, as certain count slowness, but is long-suffering to us, not counselling any to be lost but all to pass on to reformation,

9The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance,

10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; and in that day the heavens will be rolled up with a great noise, and the substance of the earth will be changed by violent heat, and the world and everything in it will be burned up.

10and it will come--the day of the Lord--as a thief in the night, in which the heavens with a rushing noise will pass away, and the elements with burning heat be dissolved, and earth and the works in it shall be burnt up.

10But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence and the elements shall be melted with heat and the earth and the works which are in it shall be burnt up.

11Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness,

11Seeing then that all these things are coming to such an end, what sort of persons is it right for you to be, in all holy behaviour and righteousness,

11All these, then, being dissolved, what kind of persons doth it behove you to be in holy behaviours and pious acts?

11Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness?

12looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

12Looking for and truly desiring the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will come to an end through fire, and the substance of the earth will be changed by the great heat?

12waiting for and hasting to the presence of the day of God, by which the heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements with burning heat shall melt;

12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat?

13But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

13But having faith in his word, we are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, which will be the resting-place of righteousness.

13and for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise we do wait, in which righteousness doth dwell;

13But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth.

14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight.

14For this reason, my loved ones, as you are looking for these things, take great care that when he comes you may be in peace before him, free from sin and every evil thing.

14wherefore, beloved, these things waiting for, be diligent, spotless and unblameable, by Him to be found in peace,

14Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace.

15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;

15And be certain that the long waiting of the Lord is for salvation; even as our brother Paul has said in his letters to you, from the wisdom which was given to him;

15and the long-suffering of our Lord count ye salvation, according as also our beloved brother Paul--according to the wisdom given to him--did write to you,

15And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation: as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you:

16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

16And as he said in all his letters, which had to do with these things; in which are some hard sayings, so that, like the rest of the holy Writings, they are twisted by those who are uncertain and without knowledge, to the destruction of their souls.

16as also in all the epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, among which things are certain hard to be understood, which the untaught and unstable do wrest, as also the other Writings, unto their own destruction.

16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

17Ye therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness.

17For this reason, my loved ones, having knowledge of these things before they take place, take care that you are not turned away by the error of the uncontrolled, so falling from your true faith.

17Ye, then, beloved, knowing before, take heed, lest, together with the error of the impious being led away, ye may fall from your own stedfastness,

17You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness.

18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and for ever. Amen.

18But be increased in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May he have glory now and for ever. So be it.

18and increase ye in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him <FI>is<Fi> the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen.

18But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity, Amen.
