1Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
1Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that pollutes the body and the spirit, and let us work toward complete holiness out of respect for God.
2Open your hearts to us: we wronged no man, we corrupted no man, we took advantage of no man.
2Make room for us in your hearts. We have not done anyone wrong, we haven't led anyone into sin, and we haven't cheated anyone.
3I say it not to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die together and live together.
3I am not saying this to blame you; I have already told you that you are so close to our hearts that we would live or die with you.
4Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying on your behalf: I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our affliction.
4I have great confidence in you and I am very proud of you. Even with all our troubles, I am deeply encouraged and my joy overflows.
5For even when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, butwe wereafflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
5When we arrived in Macedonia, we had no rest. We faced trouble at every turn—conflicts on the outside and fears on the inside.
6Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
6But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, comforted us by the arrival of Titus.
7and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more.
7It wasn't just his arrival that comforted us, but also the encouragement he received from you. He told us how much you miss me, how sorry you are for what happened, and how deeply you care for me. This made me even happier.
8For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it: though I did regret it (for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season),
8Even if my letter made you sad, I don't regret sending it. I did regret it for a moment, because I saw that the letter hurt you, though only for a little while.
9I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing.
9But now I am glad—not because you were hurt, but because your sadness led you to change your hearts and lives. You felt the kind of sorrow God wants, so we didn't harm you in any way.
10For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
10For the sadness that God uses brings a change of heart that leads to salvation and leaves no regrets. But the world's sadness leads only to death.
11For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.
11Just look at what this godly sadness has produced in you: such serious concern, such a desire to clear yourselves, such anger over wrong, such alarm, such a deep longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to see justice done! You have proven yourselves to be innocent in this whole matter.
12So although I wrote unto you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be made manifest unto you in the sight of God.
12So even though I wrote that letter to you, it wasn't mainly because of the person who did the wrong or the person who was wronged. Instead, I wrote it so that you could see for yourselves, in God's presence, how much you really care for us.
13Therefore we have been comforted: and in our comfort we joyed the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit hath been refreshed by you all.
13This is why we have been encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because all of you set his mind at ease.
14For if in anything I have gloried to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame; but as we spake all things to you in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth.
14I had bragged to him about you, and you didn't let me down. Just as everything we told you was true, our boasting to Titus about you has also proved to be true.
