What 2 Corinthians 5:3 means

Here Paul qualifies his longing: he wants to be “clothed,” not “found naked.” Nakedness pictures a disembodied state—being stripped rather than further covered. Paul’s hope is not simply to be rid of the earthly tent, but to be properly dressed in the heavenly habitation. The Christian expectation, then, is positive fullness, not mere subtraction. He is aiming at a completed, God-wrought life that leaves no residue of shame, weakness, or incompleteness. The verse safeguards against thinking that salvation is escape from creation; rather, God perfects His people, granting them a fitting, glorious mode of existence that corresponds to their renewed relationship with Him.

Context

After expressing desire for the heavenly habitation in verse 2, Paul anticipates misunderstanding. Verse 3 clarifies that his hope is not for a bare, bodiless condition but for the proper clothing God provides. This clarification leads directly into verse 4, where he restates the same point more fully: he does not wish to be “unclothed,” but “clothed upon,” so that mortal life is overcome by the life God gives. These verses refine the metaphor before Paul turns to assurance in verse 5.

v.2For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven:

v.3This passage

v.4For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened; not for that we would be unclothed, but that we would be clothed upon, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life.
