1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beer-sheba.
1A son of seven years <FI>is<Fi> Joash in his reigning, and forty years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother <FI>is<Fi> Zibiah of Beer-Sheba.
1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
1Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he was ruling for forty years in Jerusalem: his mother's name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2And Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
2And Joash doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
2And Joash did what was right in the sight of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
2And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord as long as Jehoiada the priest was living.
3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
3And Jehoiada taketh for him two wives, and he begetteth sons and daughters.
3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begot sons and daughters.
3And Jehoiada took two wives for him, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
4And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to restore the house of Jehovah.
4And it cometh to pass after this, it hath been with the heart of Joash to renew the house of Jehovah,
4And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to renew the house of Jehovah.
4Now after this Joash had a desire to put the house of the Lord into good order again;
5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year; and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.
5and he gathereth the priests and the Levites, and saith to them, `Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to strengthen the house of your God sufficiently year by year, and ye, ye do haste to the matter;' and the Levites have not hasted.
5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out to the cities of Judah and collect of all Israel money for the repair of the house of yourGod from year to year, and ye shall hasten the matter. But the Levites hastened it not.
5And getting together the priests and Levites, he said to them, Go out into the towns of Judah year by year, and get from all Israel money to keep the house of your God in good condition; and see that this is done without loss of time. The Levites, however, were slow in doing so.
6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tax of Moses the servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?
6And the king calleth for Jehoiada the head, and saith to him, `Wherefore hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses, servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?
6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses the servant of Jehovah [laid upon] the congregation of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?
6Then the king sent for Jehoiada, the chief priest, and said to him, Why have you not given the Levites orders that the tax fixed by Moses, the servant of the Lord, and by the meeting of Israel, for the Tent of witness, is to be got in from Judah and Jerusalem and handed over?
7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of Jehovah did they bestow upon the Baalim.
7for sons of Athaliah, the wicked one, have broken up the house of God, and also, all the holy things of the house of Jehovah they have prepared for Baalim.'
7For the wicked Athaliah [and] her sons had devastated the house ofGod; and also all the hallowed things of the house of Jehovah had they employed for the Baals.
7For the house of the Lord had been broken up by Athaliah, that evil woman, and her sons; and all its holy things they had given to the Baals.
8So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of Jehovah.
8And the king speaketh, and they make one chest, and put it at the gate of the house of Jehovah without,
8And the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it at the gate of the house of Jehovah without,
8So at the king's order they made a chest and put it outside the doorway of the house of the Lord.
9And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Jehovah the tax that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
9and give an intimation in Judah and in Jerusalem to bring in to Jehovah the tribute of Moses, servant of God, <FI>laid<Fi> on Israel in the wilderness.
9and they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring to Jehovah the tribute of Moses the servant ofGod [laid upon] Israel in the wilderness.
9And an order was sent out through all Judah and Jerusalem that payment was to be made to the Lord of the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had put on Israel in the waste land.
10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
10And all the heads, and all the people rejoice, and they bring in, and cast into the chest, unto completion.
10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in and cast into the chest, until they had finished.
10And all the chiefs and all the people came gladly and put their money into the chest, till they had all given.
11And it was so, that, at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
11And it cometh to pass, at the time one bringeth in the chest for the inspection of the king by the hand of the Levites, and at their seeing that the money <FI>is<Fi> abundant, that a scribe of the king hath come in, and an officer of the head-priest, and they empty the chest, and take it up and turn it back unto its place; thus they have done day by day, and gather money in abundance.
11And it came to pass at the time the chest was brought for the king's control by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king's scribe and high priest's officer came, and they emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
11So when the chest was taken to the king's servants by the Levites, and they saw that there was much money in it, the king's scribe and the chief priest's servant took the money out, and put the chest back in its place. They did this day by day, and got together a great amount of money.
12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Jehovah; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of Jehovah, and also such as wrought iron and brass to repair the house of Jehovah.
12And the king and Jehoiada give it unto the doers of the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and they are hiring hewers and artificers to renew the house of Jehovah, and also--to artificers in iron and brass to strengthen the house of Jehovah.
12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and they hired masons and carpenters to renew the house of Jehovah, and also such as wrought in iron and bronze, to repair the house of Jehovah.
12Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to those who were responsible for getting the work done on the Lord's house, and with it they got wall-builders and woodworkers and metal-workers to put the house of the Lord in good order again.
13So the workmen wrought, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up the house of God in its state, and strengthened it.
13And those doing the business work, and there goeth up lengthening to the work by their hand, and they establish the house of God, by its proper measure, and strengthen it.
13So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house ofGod in its state, and strengthened it.
13So the workmen did their work, making good what was damaged and building up the house of God till it was strong and beautiful again.
14And when they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of Jehovah, even vessels wherewith to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.
14And at their completing <FI>it<Fi> , they have brought in before the king and Jehoiada the rest of the money, and they make it vessels for the house of Jehovah, vessels of serving, and of offering up, and spoons, even vessels of gold and silver; and they are causing burnt-offerings to ascend in the house of Jehovah continually, all the days of Jehoiada.
14And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; and they made of it vessels for the house of Jehovah, utensils to minister, and with which to offer up, and cups, and utensils of gold and silver. And they offered up burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.
14And when the work was done, they took the rest of the money to the king and Jehoiada, and it was used for making the vessels for the house of the Lord, all the vessels needed for the offerings, the spoons and the vessels of gold and silver. And as long as Jehoiada was living, the regular burned offerings were offered in the house of the Lord.
15But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days, and he died; a hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
15And Jehoiada is aged and satisfied with days, and dieth--a son of a hundred and thirty years in his death,
15And Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.
15But Jehoiada became old and full of days, and he came to his end; he was a hundred and thirty years old at the time of his death.
16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.
16and they bury him in the city of David, with the kings, for he hath done good in Israel, and with God, and his house.
16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both towardGod and toward his house.
16And they put him into his last resting-place in the town of David, among the kings, because he had done good in Israel for God and for his house.
17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
17And after the death of Jehoiada come in have heads of Judah, and bow themselves to the king; then hath the king hearkened unto them,
17And after the death of Jehoiada the princes of Judah came and made obeisance to the king; then the king hearkened to them.
17Now after the death of Jehoiada, the chiefs of Judah came and went down on their faces before the king. Then the king gave ear to them.
18And they forsook the house of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.
18and they forsake the house of Jehovah, God of their fathers, and serve the shrines and the idols, and there is wrath upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt.
18And they forsook the house of Jehovah theGod of their fathers, and served the Asherahs and idols; and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
18And they gave up the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and became worshippers of pillars of wood and of the images; and because of this sin of theirs, wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem.
19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto Jehovah; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
19And He sendeth among them prophets, to bring them back unto Jehovah, and they testify against them, and they have not given ear;
19And he sent prophets among them to bring them again to Jehovah, and they testified against them; but they would not give ear.
19And the Lord sent them prophets to make them come back to him; and they gave witness against them, but they would not give ear.
20And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of Jehovah, so that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken Jehovah, he hath also forsaken you.
20and the Spirit of God hath clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he standeth over-against the people, and saith to them, `Thus said God, Why are ye transgressing the commands of Jehovah, and prosper not? because ye have forsaken Jehovah--He doth forsake you.'
20And the Spirit ofGod came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood up above the people and said unto them, Thus saithGod: Wherefore do ye transgress the commandments of Jehovah? And ye cannot prosper; for ye have forsaken Jehovah, and he hath forsaken you.
20Then the spirit of God came on Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, and, getting up before the people, he said to them, God has said, Why do you go against the orders of the Lord, so that everything goes badly for you? because you have given up the Lord, he has given you up.
21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah.
21And they conspire against him, and stone him with stones by the command of the king, in the court of the house of Jehovah,
21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the command of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah.
21But when they had made a secret design against him, he was stoned with stones, by the king's order, in the outer square of the Lord's house.
22Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah look upon it, and require it.
22and Joash the king hath not remembered the kindness that Jehoiada his father did with him, and slayeth his son, and in his death he said, `Jehovah doth see, and require.'
22And king Joash remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah see and require [it]!
22So King Joash did not keep in mind how good Jehoiada his father had been to him, but put his son to death. And in the hour of his death he said, May the Lord see it and take payment!
23And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
23And it cometh to pass, at the turn of the year, come up hath the force of Aram against him, and they come in unto Judah and Jerusalem, and destroy all the heads of the people from the people, and all their spoil they have sent to the king of Damascus,
23And it came to pass at the end of the year [that] the army of Syria came up against him; and they entered into Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them to the king at Damascus.
23Now in the spring, the army of the Aramaeans came up against him; they came against Judah and Jerusalem, putting to death all the great men of the people and sending all the goods they took from them to the king of Damascus.
24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Jehovah delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment upon Joash.
24for with few men have the force of Aram come in, and Jehovah hath given into their hand a mighty force for multitude, because they have forsaken Jehovah, God of their fathers; and with Joash they have executed judgments.
24Truly with a small company of men came the army of the Syrians, but Jehovah delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah theGod of their fathers; and they executed judgment upon Joash.
24For though the army of Aram was only a small one, the Lord gave a very great army into their hands, because they had given up the Lord, the God of their fathers. So they put into effect the punishment of Joash.
25And when they were departed from him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
25And in their going from him--for they left him with many diseases--his servants themselves have conspired against him, for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slay him on his bed, and he dieth; and they bury him in the city of David, and have not buried him in the graves of the kings.
25And when they had departed from him (for they left him in great diseases), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings.
25And when they had gone away from him, (for he was broken with disease,) his servants made a secret design against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they put him to death on his bed; and they put his body into the earth in the town of David, but not in the resting-place of the kings.
26And these are they that conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
26And these <FI>are<Fi> those conspiring against him, Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
26And these are they that conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
26Those who made designs against him were Zabad, the son of Shimeath, an Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad, the son of Shimrith, a Moabite woman.
27Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
27As to his sons, and the greatness of the burden upon him, and the foundation of the house of God, lo, they are written on the `Inquiry' of the book of the Kings; and reign doth Amaziah his son in his stead.
27And as to his sons, and the greatness of the burdens [laid] upon him, and the building of the house ofGod, behold, they are written in the treatise of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
27Now the story of his sons, and all the words said by the prophet against him, and the building up again of the Lord's house, are recorded in the account in the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son became king in his place.
