1 Timothy 2

1I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men;

1First of all, I urge you to offer petitions, prayers, intersessions, and thanksgivings for everyone.

2for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity.

2Pray for kings and all who are in positions of authority, so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives characterized by godliness and dignity.

3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

3This is good and pleases God our Savior,

4who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.

4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a full understanding of the truth.

5For there is one God, one mediator also between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus,

5For there is only one God, and there is one mediator between God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.

6who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony to be borne in its own times;

6He gave himself as a ransom for everyone, which is the message given to the world at just the right time.

7whereunto I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth, I lie not), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

7I was appointed as a preacher and an apostle to tell this message—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—to be a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and disputing.

8Therefore, I want men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or arguing.

9In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment;

9In the same way, women should dress modestly and sensibly in decent clothing, not drawing attention to themselves with fancy hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive clothes.

10but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.

10Instead, they should be known for doing good deeds, which is proper for women who claim to worship God.

11Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection.

11A woman should learn quietly and with full submission.

12But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.

12I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet.

13For Adam was first formed, then Eve;

13For Adam was created first, and then Eve.

14and Adam was not beguiled, but the woman being beguiled hath fallen into transgression:

14Also, Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

15but she shall be saved through her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety.

15But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue to live in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
