1 Thessalonians 2

1For ye know yourselves, brethren, our entering in which [we had] to you, that it has not been in vain;

1For yourselves, brethren, know our entering in unto you, that it hath not been found vain:

1For you yourselves, brothers, are conscious that our coming among you was not without effect:

2but, having suffered before and been insulted, even as ye know, in Philippi, we were bold in ourGod to speak unto you the glad tidings ofGod with much earnest striving.

2but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as ye know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God in much conflict.

2But after we had first undergone much pain and been cruelly attacked as you saw, at Philippi, by the help of God we gave you the good news without fear, though everything was against us.

3For our exhortation [was] not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile;

3For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:

3For our witness does not come from error or from an unclean heart or from deceit:

4but even as we have been approved ofGod to have the glad tidings entrusted to us, so we speak; not as pleasing men, butGod, who proves our hearts.

4but even as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God who proveth our hearts.

4But even as the good news was given to us by the approval of God, so we give it out; not as pleasing men, but God by whom our hearts are tested.

5For we have not at any time been [among you] with flattering discourse, even as ye know, nor with a pretext for covetousness,God [is] witness;

5For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness;

5For it is common knowledge among you that we never made use of smooth-sounding false words, and God is witness that at no time were we secretly desiring profit for ourselves,

6nor seeking glory from men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have been a charge as Christ's apostles;

6nor seeking glory of men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.

6Or looking for glory from men, from you or from others, when we might have made ourselves a care to you as Apostles of Christ.

7but have been gentle in the midst of you, as a nurse would cherish her own children.

7But we were gentle in the midst of you, as when a nurse cherisheth her own children:

7But we were gentle among you, like a woman caring for her little ones:

8Thus, yearning over you, we had found our delight in having imparted to you not only the glad tidings ofGod, but our own lives also, because ye had become beloved of us.

8even so, being affectionately desirous of you, we were well pleased to impart unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were become very dear to us.

8Even so, being full of loving desire for you, we took delight in giving you not only God's good news, but even our lives, because you were dear to us.

9For ye remember, brethren, our labour and toil: working night and day, not to be chargeable to any one of you, we have preached to you the glad tidings ofGod.

9For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

9For you have the memory, my brothers, of our trouble and care; how, working night and day, so that we might not be a trouble to any of you, we gave you the good news of God.

10Ye [are] witnesses, andGod, how piously and righteously and blamelessly we have conducted ourselves with you that believe:

10Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and righteously and unblamably we behaved ourselves toward you that believe:

10You are witnesses, with God, how holy and upright and free from all evil was our way of life among you who have faith;

11as ye know how, as a father his own children, we used to exhort each one of you, and comfort and testify,

11as ye know how we dealt with each one of you, as a father with his own children, exhorting you, and encouraging you, and testifying,

11Even as you saw how, like a father with his children, we were teaching and comforting you all, and giving witness,

12that ye should walk worthy ofGod, who calls you to his own kingdom and glory.

12to the end that ye should walk worthily of God, who calleth you into his own kingdom and glory.

12So that your lives might be pleasing to God, who has given you a part in his kingdom and his glory.

13And for this cause we also give thanks toGod unceasingly that, having received [the] word of [the] report ofGod by us, ye accepted, not men's word, but, even as it is truly,God's word, which also works in you who believe.

13And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, even the word of God, ye accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.

13And for this cause we still give praise to God, that, when the word came to your ears through us, you took it, not as the word of man, but, as it truly is, the word of God, which has living power in you who have faith.

14For ye, brethren, have become imitators of the assemblies ofGod which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; for ye also have suffered the same things of your own countrymen as also they of the Jews,

14For ye, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judæa in Christ Jesus: for ye also suffered the same things of your own countrymen, even as they did of the Jews;

14For you, my brothers, took as your examples the churches of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; because you underwent the same things from your countrymen as they did from the Jews;

15who have both slain the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and have driven us out by persecution, and do not pleaseGod, and [are] against all men,

15who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove out us, and please not God, and are contrary to all men;

15Who put to death the Lord Jesus and the prophets, violently driving us out; who are unpleasing to God and against all men;

16forbidding us to speak to the nations that they may be saved, that they may fill up their sins always: but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.

16forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always: but the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

16Who, to make the measure of their sins complete, kept us from giving the word of salvation to the Gentiles: but the wrath of God is about to come on them in the fullest degree.

17But we, brethren, having been bereaved of you and separated for a little moment in person, not in heart, have used more abundant diligence to see your face with much desire;

17But we, brethren, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence not in heart, endeavored the more exceedingly to see your face with great desire:

17But we, my brothers, being away from you for a short time, in body but not in heart, had all the more desire to see your face;

18wherefore we have desired to come to you, even I Paul, both once and twice, and Satan has hindered us.

18For which reason we made attempts to come to you, even I, Paul, once and again; but Satan kept us from coming.

19For what [is] our hope, or joy, or crown of boasting? [are] not ye also before our Lord Jesus at his coming?

19For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glorying? Are not even ye, before our Lord Jesus at his coming?

19For what is our hope or joy or crown of glory? Are not even you, before our Lord Jesus, at his coming?

20for ye are our glory and joy.
