1Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.
1After the Philistines captured the ark of God, they moved it from Eben-ezer to the city of Ashdod.
2And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
2They carried the ark of God into the temple of their god, Dagon, and placed it right next to his statue.
3And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
3When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, they saw that Dagon had fallen face down on the ground in front of the ark of the LORD. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place.
4And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands lay cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
4But when they got up early the following morning, Dagon had fallen face down on the ground before the ark of the LORD again. This time, Dagon’s head and both his hands were broken off and lying on the doorway; only his body was left intact.
5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, unto this day.
5That is why, to this very day, the priests of Dagon and anyone else who enters Dagon’s temple in Ashdod will not step on the doorway.
6But the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumors, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.
6The LORD’s power was heavy against the people of Ashdod. He brought devastation on them and struck the people of Ashdod and the surrounding area with painful tumors.
7And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us; for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
7When the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because he is punishing us and our god Dagon."
8They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel thither.
8So they called a meeting of all the Philistine rulers and asked, "What should we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" They decided, "Move the ark of the God of Israel to Gath." So they moved the ark there.
9And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with a very great discomfiture: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors brake out upon them.
9But after they moved it, the LORD’s power was against that city too, causing an enormous panic. He struck the people of the city, both young and old, and they broke out with tumors.
10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
10Next, they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark arrived in Ekron, the people there cried out, "They have brought the ark of the God of Israel here to kill us and our people!"
11They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people. For there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
11They called all the Philistine rulers together and said, "Send the ark of the God of Israel back to its own place, so it doesn't kill us and our families." A deadly terror had spread through the whole city because God’s hand was heavy upon them.
