What 1 Peter 1:10 means

This salvation was not an afterthought. The prophets “sought and searched diligently” into the grace that would come to Peter’s readers. They prophesied about it, yet longed to grasp its timing and contours. Their earnest inquiry shows the riches of the salvation now revealed. It is the same gracious plan, anticipated in earlier ages, that has reached its fulfillment in Christ. Believers thus stand within the stream of God’s redemptive history, recipients of what holy men desired to understand more fully. Their faith is confirmed by this continuity between prophetic promise and gospel fulfillment.

Context

Verse 10 looks back from the believers’ present experience of salvation (v. 9) to the prophets’ anticipation. Verses 11–12 will specify that the Spirit of Christ foretold the Messiah’s sufferings and glories and that this message is now preached by the Holy Spirit. This bridge from promise to fulfillment strengthens confidence during trials by showing God’s long-prepared plan.

v.9receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

v.10This passage

v.11searching what time or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did point unto, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow them.
