What 1 John 5:12 means
John states the matter as plainly as possible: “He that hath the Son hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.” Salvation is not a spectrum but a relationship. To “have” the Son is to belong to Him by faith, sharing in the life God gives in Him. No other path, system, or substitute can supply eternal life. This exclusivity is not harsh but hopeful, because God has truly given His Son. Assurance is anchored here: if you have the Son, you have life—despite weakness. If you do not, no amount of religious veneer can compensate.

Context
Verse 12 concludes the testimony’s core message begun in verse 11 with a decisive contrast. This leads directly to verse 13, where John discloses his purpose in writing: that those who believe on the name of the Son of God may know they have eternal life. With assurance clarified, the next verses (14–15) describe confident prayer according to God’s will, and then (16–17) apply that confidence to interceding for a brother caught in sin, while warning about a “sin unto death.”
