1My loved ones, do not put your faith in every spirit, but put them to the test, to see if they are from God: because a great number of false prophets have gone out into the world.

1Beloved, every spirit believe not, but prove the spirits, if of God they are, because many false prophets have gone forth to the world;

1Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2By this you may have knowledge of the Spirit of God: every spirit which says that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God:

2in this know ye the Spirit of God; every spirit that doth confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is,

2By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3And every spirit which does not say this is not from God: this is the spirit of Antichrist, of which you have had word; and it is in the world even now.

3and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is not; and this is that of the antichrist, which ye heard that it doth come, and now in the world it is already.

3And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus is not of God. And this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh: and he is now already in the world.

4You are of God, my little children, and you have overcome them because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

4Ye--of God ye are, little children, and ye have overcome them; because greater is He who <FI>is<Fi> in you, than he who is in the world.

4You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5They are of the world, so their talk is the world's talk, and the world gives ear to them.

5They--of the world they are; because of this from the world they speak, and the world doth hear them;

5They are of the world. Therefore of the world they speak: and the world heareth them.

6We are of God: he who has the knowledge of God gives ear to us; he who is not of God does not give ear to us. By this we may see which is the true spirit, and which is the spirit of error.

6we--of God we are; he who is knowing God doth hear us; he who is not of God, doth not hear us; from this we know the spirit of the truth, and the spirit of the error.

6We are of God. He that knoweth God heareth us. He that is not of God heareth us not. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

7My loved ones, let us have love for one another: because love is of God, and everyone who has love is a child of God and has knowledge of God.

7Beloved, may we love one another, because the love is of God, and every one who is loving, of God he hath been begotten, and doth know God;

7Dearly beloved, let us love one another: for charity is of God. And every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God.

8He who has no love has no knowledge of God, because God is love.

8he who is not loving did not know God, because God is love.

8He that loveth not knoweth not God: for God is charity.

9And the love of God was made clear to us when he sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.

9In this was manifested the love of God in us, because His Son--the only begotten--hath God sent to the world, that we may live through him;

9By this hath the charity of God appeared towards us, because God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live by him.

10And this is love, not that we had love for God, but that he had love for us, and sent his Son to be an offering for our sins.

10in this is the love, not that we loved God, but that He did love us, and did send His Son a propitiation for our sins.

10In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he hath first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins.

11My loved ones, if God had such love for us, it is right for us to have love for one another.

11Beloved, if thus did God love us, we also ought one another to love;

11My dearest, if God hath so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

12No man has ever seen God: if we have love for one another, God is in us and his love is made complete in us:

12God no one hath ever seen; if we may love one another, God in us doth remain, and His love is having been perfected in us;

12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abideth in us: and his charity is perfected in us.

13And his Spirit which he has given us is the witness that we are in him and he is in us.

13in this we know that in Him we do remain, and He in us, because of His Spirit He hath given us.

13In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he hath given us of his spirit.

14And we have seen and give witness that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

14And we--we have seen and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son--Saviour of the world;

14And we have seen and do testify that the Father hath sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15Everyone who says openly that Jesus is the Son of God, has God in him and is in God.

15whoever may confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God in him doth remain, and he in God;

15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God.

16And we have seen and had faith in the love which God has for us. God is love, and everyone who has love is in God, and God is in him.

16and we--we have known and believed the love, that God hath in us; God is love, and he who is remaining in the love, in God he doth remain, and God in him.

16And we have known and have believed the charity which God hath to us. God is charity: and he that abideth in charity abideth in God, and God in him.

17In this way love is made complete in us, so that we may be without fear on the day of judging, because as he is, so are we in this world.

17In this made perfect hath been the love with us, that boldness we may have in the day of the judgment, because even as He is, we--we also are in this world;

17In this is the charity of God perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment: because as he is, we also are in this world.

18There is no fear in love: true love has no room for fear, because where fear is, there is pain; and he who is not free from fear is not complete in love.

18fear is not in the love, but the perfect love doth cast out the fear, because the fear hath punishment, and he who is fearing hath not been made perfect in the love;

18Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casteth out fear, because fear hath sin. And he that feareth is not perfected in charity.

19We have the power of loving, because he first had love for us.

19we--we love him, because He--He first loved us;

19Let us therefore love God: because God first hath loved us.

20If a man says, I have love for God, and has hate for his brother, his words are false: for how is the man who has no love for his brother whom he has seen, able to have love for God whom he has not seen?

20if any one may say--`I love God,' and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he hath seen, God--whom he hath not seen--how is he able to love?

20If any man say: I love God, and hateth his brother; he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother whom he seeth, how can he love God whom he seeth not?

21And this is the word which we have from him, that he who has love for God is to have the same love for his brother.

21and this <FI>is<Fi> the command we have from Him, that he who is loving God, may also love his brother.

21And this commandment we have from God, that he who loveth God love also his brother.
