1It is actually reported that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not even among the Gentiles, that oneof you hath his father’s wife.
1It is actually being reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that doesn't even happen among pagans: a man is living with his father’s wife.
2And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you.
2And you are proud! Shouldn’t you instead be filled with grief and remove the man who has done this from your fellowship?
3For I verily, being absent in body but present in spirit, have already as though I were present judged him that hath so wrought this thing,
3Even though I am not there with you in person, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the man who did this, just as if I were there.
4in the name of our Lord Jesus, ye being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,
4When you are gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, using the power of our Lord Jesus,
5to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
5you must hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of his sinful nature, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
6Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast spreads through the whole batch of dough?
7Purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, even as ye are unleavened. For our passover also hath been sacrificed, even Christ:
7Get rid of the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough without yeast—which is what you really are. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.
8wherefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
8So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the bread without yeast, which is sincerity and truth.
9I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators;
9I wrote to you in my previous letter not to associate with people who are sexually immoral.
10not at all meaning with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world:
10I didn't mean the people of this world who are immoral, or greedy, or swindlers, or those who worship idols. To avoid them, you would have to leave this world entirely.
11but as it is, I wrote unto you not to keep company, if any man that is named a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no, not to eat.
11What I meant was that you should not associate with anyone who claims to be a believer but is sexually immoral, greedy, an idolater, a slanderer, a drunkard, or a swindler. Don’t even eat with such a person.
