1 Corinthians 10

1For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud: and all passed through the sea.

1And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,

1For it is my desire, my brothers, that you may keep in mind how all our fathers were under the cloud, and they all went through the sea;

2And all in Moses were baptized, in the cloud and in the sea:

2and all to Moses were baptized in the cloud, and in the sea;

2And they all had baptism from Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3And did all eat the same spiritual food:

3and all the same spiritual food did eat,

3And they all took the same holy food;

4And all drank the same spiritual drink: (And they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.)

4and all the same spiritual drink did drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;

4And the same holy drink: for they all took of the water from the holy rock which came after them: and the rock was Christ.

5But with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the desert.

5but in the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were strewn in the wilderness,

6Now these things were done in a figure of us, that we should not covet evil things, as they also coveted.

6and those things became types of us, for our not passionately desiring evil things, as also these did desire.

6Now these things were for an example to us, so that our hearts might not go after evil things, as they did.

7Neither become ye idolaters, as some of them, as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

7Neither become ye idolaters, as certain of them, as it hath been written, `The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood up to play;'

7Then do not go after false gods, as some of them did; as it is said in the holy Writings, After resting and feasting, the people got up to take their pleasure.

8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them that committed fornication: and there fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

8neither may we commit whoredom, as certain of them did commit whoredom, and there fell in one day twenty-three thousand;

8Again, let us not give way to the desires of the flesh, as some of them did, of whom twenty-three thousand came to their end in one day.

9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them tempted and perished by the serpent.

9neither may we tempt the Christ, as also certain of them did tempt, and by the serpents did perish;

9And let us not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did, and came to their death by snakes.

10Neither do you murmur, as some of them murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer.

10neither murmur ye, as also some of them did murmur, and did perish by the destroyer.

10And do not say evil things against the Lord, as some of them did, and destruction overtook them.

11Now all these things happened to them in figure: and they are written for our correction, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

11And all these things as types did happen to those persons, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages did come,

11Now these things were done as an example; and were put down in writing for our teaching, on whom the last days have come.

12Wherefore, he that thinketh himself to stand, let him take heed lest he fall.

12so that he who is thinking to stand--let him observe, lest he fall.

12So let him who seems to himself to be safe go in fear of a fall.

13Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.

13No temptation hath taken you--except human; and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able, but He will make, with the temptation, also the outlet, for your being able to bear <FI>it<Fi> .

13You have been put to no test but such as is common to man: and God is true, who will not let any test come on you which you are not able to undergo; but he will make with the test a way out of it, so that you may be able to go through it.

14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, fly from the service of idols.

14Wherefore, my beloved, flee from the idolatry;

14For this cause, my dear brothers, give no worship to false gods.

15I speak as to wise men: judge ye yourselves what I say.

15as to wise men I speak--judge ye what I say:

15What I am saying is for wise men, do you be the judges of it.

16The chalice of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? And the bread which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord?

16The cup of the blessing that we bless--is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? the bread that we break--is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?

16The cup of blessing which we take, does it not give us a part in the blood of Christ? and is not the broken bread a taking part in the body of Christ?

17For we, being many, are one bread, one body: all that partake of one bread.

17because one bread, one body, are we the many--for we all of the one bread do partake.

17Because we, being a number of persons, are one bread, we are one body: for we all take part in the one bread.

18Behold Israel according to the flesh. Are not they that eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

18See Israel according to the flesh! are not those eating the sacrifices in the fellowship of the altar?

18See Israel after the flesh: do not those who take as food the offerings of the altar take a part in the altar?

19What then? Do I say that what is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? Or that the idol is any thing?

19what then do I say? that an idol is anything? or that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything? --

19Do I say, then, that what is offered to images is anything, or that the image is anything?

20But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils.

20<FI> no,<Fi> but that the things that the nations sacrifice--they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to come into the fellowship of the demons.

20What I say is that the things offered by the Gentiles are offered to evil spirits and not to God; and it is not my desire for you to have any part with evil spirits.

21You cannot drink the chalice of the Lord and the chalice of devils: you cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord and of the table of devils.

21Ye are not able the cup of the Lord to drink, and the cup of demons; ye are not able of the table of the Lord to partake, and of the table of demons;

21It is not possible for you, at the same time, to take the cup of the Lord and the cup of evil spirits; you may not take part in the table of the Lord and the table of evil spirits.

22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me: but all things are not expedient.

22do we arouse the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than He?

22Or may we be the cause of envy to the Lord? are we stronger than he?

23All things are lawful for me: but all things do not edify.

23All things to me are lawful, but all things are not profitable; all things to me are lawful, but all things do not build up;

23We are free to do all things, but there are things which it is not wise to do. We are free to do all things, but not all things are for the common good.

24Let no man seek his own, but that which is another's.

24let no one seek his own--but each another's.

24Let a man give attention not only to what is good for himself, but equally to his neighbour's good.

25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat: asking no question for conscience' sake.

25Whatever in the meat-market is sold eat ye, not inquiring, because of the conscience,

25Whatever meat may be had at the public market, take as food without question of right or wrong;

26The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof.

26for the Lord's <FI>is<Fi> the earth, and its fulness;

26For the earth is the Lord's and all things in it.

27If any of them that believe not, invite you, and you be willing to go: eat of any thing that is set before you, asking no question for conscience' sake.

27and if any one of the unbelieving do call you, and ye wish to go, all that is set before you eat, nothing inquiring, because of the conscience;

27If a Gentile makes a feast for you, and you are pleased to go as a guest, take whatever is put before you, without question of right or wrong.

28But if any man say: This has been sacrificed to idols: do not eat of it, for his sake that told it and for conscience' sake.

28and if any one may say to you, `This is a thing sacrificed to an idol,' --do not eat, because of that one who shewed <FI>it<Fi> , and of the conscience, for the Lord's <FI>is<Fi> the earth and its fulness:

28But if anyone says to you, This food has been used as an offering, do not take it, on account of him who said it, and on account of his sense of right and wrong:

29Conscience I say, not thy own, but the other's. For why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience?

29and conscience, I say, not of thyself, but of the other, for why <FI>is it<Fi> that my liberty is judged by another's conscience?

29Right and wrong, I say, not for you, but for the other man; for the fact that I am free is not dependent on another man's sense of right or wrong.

30If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

30and if I thankfully do partake, why am I evil spoken of, for that for which I give thanks?

30But if I give praise to God for the food which I take, let no man say evil of me for that reason.

31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.

31Whether, then, ye eat, or drink, or do anything, do all to the glory of God;

31So then, if it is a question of food or drink, or any other thing, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

32Be without offence to the Jew, and to the Gentiles and to the church of God:

32become offenceless, both to Jews and Greeks, and to the assembly of God;

32Give no cause of trouble to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God.

33As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself but to many: that they may be saved.

33as I also in all things do please all, not seeking my own profit, but that of many--that they may be saved.

33Even as I give way to all men in all things, not looking for profit for myself, but for the good of others, that they may get salvation.
