1Now the sons of Ruben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was his firstborn: but forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his first birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, and he was not accounted for the firstborn.

1As to sons of Reuben, first-born of Israel--for he <FI>is<Fi> the first-born, and on account of his profaning the couch of his father hath his birthright been given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, and <FI>he is<Fi> not to be reckoned by genealogy for the birthright,

2But of the race of Juda, who was the strongest among his brethren, came the princes: but the first birthright was accounted to Joseph.)

2for Judah hath been mighty over his brother, and for leader above him, and the birthright <FI>is<Fi> to Joseph.

3The sons then of Ruben the firstborn of Israel were Enoch, and Phallu, Esron, and Charmi.

7And his brethren, and all his kindred, when they were numbered by their families, had for princes Jehiel, and Zacharias.

7And his brethren, by their families, in the genealogy of their generations, <FI>are<Fi> heads: Jeiel, and Zechariah,

8And Bala the son of Azaz, the son of Samma, the son of Joel, dwelt in Aroer as far as Nebo, and Beelmeon.

8and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel--he is dwelling in Aroer, even unto Nebo and Baal-Meon;

9And eastward he had his habitation as far as the entrance of the desert, and the river Euphrates. For they possessed a great number of cattle in the land of Galaad.

9and at the east he dwelt even unto the entering in of the wilderness, even from the river Phrat, for their cattle were multiplied in the land of Gilead.

10And in the days of Saul they fought against the Agarites, and slew them, and dwelt in their tents in their stead, in all the country, that looketh to the east of Galaad.

10And in the days of Saul they have made war with the Hagarites, who fall by their hand, and they dwell in their tents over all the face of the east of Gilead.

11And the children of Gad dwelt over against them in the land of Basan, as far as Selcha:

11And the sons of Gad, over-against them have dwelt in the land of Bashan unto Salcah,

12Johel the chief, and Saphan the second: and Janai, and Saphat in Basan.

12Joel the head, and Shapham the second, and Jaanai and Shaphat in Bashan;

13And their brethren according to the houses of their kindreds, were Michael and Mosollam, and Sebe, and Jorai, and Jacan, and Zie, and Heber, seven.

13and their brethren of the house of their fathers <FI>are<Fi> Michael, and Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zia, and Heber, seven.

14These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jara, the son of Galaad, the son of Michael, the son of Jesisi, the son of Jeddo, the son of Buz.

14These <FI>are<Fi> sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz;

15And their brethren the sons of Abdiel, the son of Guni, chief of the house in their families,

15Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, <FI>is<Fi> head of the house of their fathers;

16And they dwelt in Galaad, and in Basan and in the towns thereof, and in all the suburbs of Saron, unto the borders.

16and they dwell in Gilead in Bashan, and in her small towns, and in all suburbs of Sharon, upon their outskirts;

17All these were numbered in the days of Joathan king of Juda, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

17all of them reckoned themselves by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

18The Sons of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses, fighting men, bearing shields, and swords, and bending the bow, and trained up to battles, four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore that went out to war.

18Sons of Reuben, and the Gadite, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, of sons of valour, men bearing shield and sword, and treading bow, and taught in battle, <FI>are<Fi> forty and four thousand and seven hundred and sixty, going out to the host.

19They fought against the Agarites: but the Itureans, and Naphis, and Nodab,

19And they make war with the Hagarites, and Jetur, and Naphish, and Nodab,

20Gave them help. And the Agarites were delivered into their hands, and all that were with them, because they called upon God in the battle: and he heard them, because they had put their faith in him.

20and they are helped against them, and the Hagarites are given into their hand, and all who <FI>are<Fi> with them, for they cried to God in battle, and He was entreated of them, because they trusted in Him.

21And they took all that they possessed, of camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men a hundred thousand souls.

21And they take captive their cattle, of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of human beings a hundred thousand;

22And many fell down slain: for it was the battle of the Lord. And they dwelt in their stead till the captivity.

22for many have fallen pierced, for of God <FI>is<Fi> the battle; and they dwell in their stead till the removal.

23And the children of the half tribe of Manasses possessed the land, from the borders of Basan unto Baal, Hermon, and Sanir, and mount Hermon, for their number was great.

23And the sons of the half of the tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land, from Bashan unto Baal-Hermon, and Senir, and mount Hermon, they have multiplied.

24And these were the heads of the house of their kindred, Epher, and Jesi, and Eliel, and Esriel, and Jeremia, and Odoia, and Jediel, most valiant and powerful men, and famous chiefs in their families.

24And these <FI>are<Fi> heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, men mighty in valour, men of name, heads to the house of their fathers.

25But they forsook the God of their fathers, and went astray after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.

25And they trespass against the God of their fathers, and go a-whoring after the gods of the peoples of the land whom God destroyed from their presence;

26And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Phul king of the Assyrians. and the spirit of Thelgathphalnasar king of Assur: and he carried away Ruben, and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, and brought them to Lahela, and to Habor, and to Ara, and to the river of Gozan, unto this day.

26and stir up doth the God of Israel the spirit of Pul king of Asshur, and the spirit of Tilgath-Pilneser king of Asshur, and he removeth them--even the Reubenite, and the Gadite, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh--and bringeth them in to Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and the river of Gozan unto this day.
